{"id":45439,"date":"2017-06-22T14:52:44","date_gmt":"2017-06-22T18:52:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=45439"},"modified":"2017-08-29T16:10:26","modified_gmt":"2017-08-29T20:10:26","slug":"green-thumbs-needed-for-brock-garden-plots","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2017\/06\/green-thumbs-needed-for-brock-garden-plots\/","title":{"rendered":"Green thumbs needed for Brock garden plots"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Brock gardeners, whether green or experienced, are needed to mind community plots on campus.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The community garden, located in front of Zone 2 beside Theal House, has six plots still available this growing season at no cost.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is the first year Niagara Sustainability Initiative (NSI) is overseeing the green space in partnership with the University.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The garden, which includes 12 plots in total that are each eight feet long and four feet wide, was built in 2012 to allow students to grow a variety of produce. Use of the plots has since been opened up to include all members of the Brock community.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gardeners get to keep anything they grow.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Participants are responsible for maintaining their plot and the pathways around their garden space. NSI volunteers are currently maintaining the unclaimed plots.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tools are available on site for use.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt allows people to come out during their lunch break or after work to unwind and do some work at the garden,\u201d said NSI Executive Director Tikvah Mindorff (BA \u201915), who founded the garden during her time at Brock.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mindorff encouraged people who are interested in gardening but don\u2019t necessarily have the experience, to contact the NSI for help.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhether you\u2019re experienced or not, the garden is an opportunity to learn,\u201d she said.\u00a0<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThere\u2019s very fertile soil at Brock.
