{"id":45387,"date":"2017-06-19T16:33:51","date_gmt":"2017-06-19T20:33:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=45387"},"modified":"2017-08-29T16:10:30","modified_gmt":"2017-08-29T20:10:30","slug":"joint-program-lets-grade-12-students-earn-a-brock-kinesiology-credit","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2017\/06\/joint-program-lets-grade-12-students-earn-a-brock-kinesiology-credit\/","title":{"rendered":"Joint program lets Grade 12 students earn a Brock kinesiology credit"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"p1 page-intro\"><b><\/b><span class=\"dropcap\"><span class=\"s1\">Brock University and Niagara Catholic District School Board (NCDSB) have launched a partnership to help better prepare students pursuing kinesiology as they make the leap from high school to university.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">Beginning in September, students at Denis Morris Catholic High School in St. Catharines who enroll in Introduction to Kinesiology, a Grade 12 university preparation course, will be able to receive credit towards a first-year Brock Kinesiology course called Foundations of Movement Studies.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">About 30 high school students will travel to Brock twice a week to participate in lectures and activity-based classes, all while interacting with faculty from the University\u2019s Department of Kinesiology.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">The Exercise Science course will cover a range of topics, including sport history, physical literacy, sport for development, movement sciences, developmental physical activity, sport policy, and social issues and sport. \u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">Brock and NCDSB officials, joined by Denis Morris students, gathered on Monday, June 19 in Brock\u2019s Bob Davis Gymnasium to <a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2017\/06\/brock-niagara-catholic-to-launch-dual-credit-exercise-science-course\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">formally launch the partnership<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_45389\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-45389\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-45389\" src=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/Exercise-Science-course-launch-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"Dual-credit course launch\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-45389\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Denis Morris Catholic High School student Jarod Cleland gathers Brock University gear after the launch of a new dual-credit Kinesiology course announced Monday, June 19.<\/p><\/div>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cThis unique opportunity to obtain a high school credit while also obtaining a Brock University credit speaks loudly to our commitment to supporting our local community and students,\u201d said Jamie Mandigo, Brock\u2019s Vice-Provost, Enrolment Management and International, who will also be leading the program as a Kinesiology faculty member. \u201cIt also speaks to the NCDSB\u2019s commitment to encouraging and preparing their students to be successful at their next step of learning at post-secondary institutions.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">Mandigo, who hopes this leads to further such collaborations, said the initiative is intended to help high school students feel comfortable on Brock\u2019s campus, and show them that obtaining a university degree is possible.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">Peter Tiidus, Brock\u2019s Dean of Faculty of Applied Health Sciences, said the experience will \u201cprovide these students with a greater understanding and appreciation of the academic field of kinesiology, including its depth and breadth, that will serve them well in their future education and personal lives.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cIt will perhaps encourage some of them to pursue further post-secondary education in kinesiology, ideally at Brock University, where we look to be the university of choice, particularly for top students from the Niagara region.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">John Crocco, Niagara Catholic\u2019s Director of Education, said the partnership will give high school students the opportunity to explore the Kinesiology program, while also experiencing a university classroom and becoming familiar with Brock\u2019s campus.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cOur Denis Morris students are pioneers in this program,\u201d he said.
