{"id":45283,"date":"2017-06-12T14:52:54","date_gmt":"2017-06-12T18:52:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=45283"},"modified":"2017-07-07T09:09:35","modified_gmt":"2017-07-07T13:09:35","slug":"students-take-life-changing-journey-through-southern-africa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2017\/06\/students-take-life-changing-journey-through-southern-africa\/","title":{"rendered":"GALLERY: Students take life-changing journey through southern Africa"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Eighteen hours in &#8216;The Beast&#8217; was just the start.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A colossal bus ride through the uneven roads of southern Africa is not what most students would think of when they ponder experiential learning at Brock University. However, on the Brock Abroad: Namibia program, 18 hours in the all-terrain \u2018beast\u2019 bus was just the beginning of what would prove to be a life-changing experience.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Launched in 2007, the annual Africa journey is one of several experiential learning programs offered by Brock International Services, in which participants learn about local academics, business and culture, while participating in a variety of activities and workshops. <\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_45294\" style=\"width: 402px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-45294\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-45294\" src=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/The-Beast-1-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"The Beast\" width=\"392\" height=\"294\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-45294\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">\u2018The Beast,\u2019 a vehicle from Wadadee Guest House, took the team everywhere, including an 18-hour drive from Cape Town, South Africa, to Windhoek, Namibia.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This spring, 21 Brock students and their co-leaders flew out on April 26 for a\u00a0month-long odyssey that began in Cape Town, South Africa. \u00a0While there, the group visited Robben Island \u2014 where Nelson Mandela was imprisoned before the fall of apartheid \u2014 and learned more about the townships that surround the city. The group also spent time learning about the fight to end apartheid, and the unique struggle Namibia faced in gaining its independence.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">From Cape Town, the students boarded \u2018The Beast\u2019 for the 1,400-kilometre bus ride to the Namibian capital, Windhoek, where they participated in a wide array of hands-on experiential opportunities.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of the program\u2019s goals is to have participants identify and understand the challenges and opportunities faced in the host community, and how they relate to communities in Canada. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt\u2019s through the vehicle of volunteering, visiting important cultural sites and museums, and speaking with local community partners that participants learn,\u201d said Christina Bosilo, co-leader of the trip and manager of international learning programs in Brock International Services.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The students met this important goal by working alongside several local organizations, including the Bernard Nordkamp Centre (BNC) in Katutura, which provides after-school programming for local children. At the BNC the team provided leadership training for older children as well as wellness-based activities for younger participants.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But Child and Youth Studies student Madeline Pontone was quick to point out that the important lessons being learned were not exclusive to the youngsters in the classroom.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cGetting to live and volunteer in the community of Katutura provided a level of immersion that fostered deep reflection and learning, something that is difficult to achieve at home,\u201d she said. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For Janet Westbury, experiential education co-ordinator for graduate programs in Brock\u2019s Faculty of Applied Health Sciences and the trip\u2019s other co-leader, these pivotal interactions created the a unique legacy for those on the journey.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt\u2019s important that it\u2019s not just about what we taught, but also what they taught us,\u201d she said. \u201cWe learned from the leaders in the communities.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The team also spent time painting local schools and took part in excursions which showed them the natural beauty of the country.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe landscape, it\u2019s stunning and ever-changing,\u201d said Westbury. \u201cYou don\u2019t want to miss anything outside the window. Namibia has a huge diversity in a relatively small package.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">From sandboarding in the dunes to taking the children from the BNC to a local giraffe sanctuary, the group experienced a huge cross-section of Namibia\u2019s culture and landscape in a relatively short amount of time.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For Child and Youth Studies student Carley Kent, the well-rounded nature of the trip has been life changing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt may sound clich\u00e9,\u201d she said, \u201cbut my experience in southwest Africa has forever changed me as a person.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For Westbury, the month-long trip seemed to fly by, and all too quickly the team was on its way back to Canada \u2014 but not before they had grown in ways that seemed unimaginable before they set off.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cA co-curricular trip like this focuses on growing our students personally,\u201d she said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cOur whole team chose to be present in each moment of the trip, and for this reason they will come home with a new awareness of the day-to-day realities of those living on the other side of the world. But even more importantly, they will bring to Canada a full slate of invaluable lessons to share about the beautiful Namibian culture and hospitality that we were greeted with every
