{"id":45191,"date":"2017-06-08T12:34:36","date_gmt":"2017-06-08T16:34:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=45191"},"modified":"2017-06-12T15:23:38","modified_gmt":"2017-06-12T19:23:38","slug":"celebrating-co-op-and-convocation-from-near-and-far","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2017\/06\/celebrating-co-op-and-convocation-from-near-and-far\/","title":{"rendered":"Celebrating co-op and Convocation from near and far"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"page-intro\"><b><\/b><span class=\"dropcap\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Though they live in different countries and study in different programs, three graduating Brock students share one very important advantage \u2014 co-op experience.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Phume Ngampornsukswadi, Elena Milenkovski and Harrish Thirukumaran all took part in the University\u2019s renowned co-op program during their studies.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As they celebrate Convocation this week and prepare to enter the working world, the students have spent time reflecting on the personal and professional growth the program provides.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nearly 14,000 kilometres from Brock, on a military base in Thailand where he is fulfilling mandatory service, Ngampornsukswadi recalls initially having a very narrow view of the co-op program.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_45213\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-45213\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-45213\" src=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/Phume-Ngampornsukswadi-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"Phume Ngampornsukswadi\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-45213\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Due to his current military service commitment in Thailand, Phume Ngampornsukswadi was unable to attend his Convocation.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe only thing I knew was that it allowed me to work while completing my degree,\u201d said the graduand of Mathematics Integrated with Computer and Applications.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But, in time, the program\u2019s influence on his career trajectory became much more defined.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cMy co-op experience at Brock has been quite a ride,\u201d he said. \u201cDespite some stressful times, I really had fun throughout my terms. It was such an amazing and rewarding experience. I learned how to work under pressure and work in a team.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Milenkovski, a Dramatic Arts student originally from Scarborough, holds similar feelings, and highlights the in-depth nature of the programming.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI didn\u2019t realize that there was going to be an actual class,\u201d she said. \u201cI thought it would just be a booklet. They really guided us and gave us the steps on how to be a professional in the working world. I would have missed that opportunity otherwise.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She pointed out the practicality of the skills taught in co-op classes and their ongoing use in her life.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThey helped me write a resum\u00e9 and cover letter and then reviewed it,\u201d she said. \u201cThat was one of the most valuable things. I still go through my co-op notes to apply for jobs today.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The skills and career guidance that the co-op staff provide to students are coupled with the ability to actively explore work within their field of study. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Meanwhile, Thirukumaran, a Political Science student, said co-op enabled him to chart a course for his career that he did not have before.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe co-op experience, particularly in the public sector, inspired me to pursue a long-term professional career in public service,\u201d he said from his home in Dayton, N.J.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Beyond focusing career aspirations, the students also praised the ability of the program to help them enter their chosen fields.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_45220\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-45220\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-45220\" src=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/Harrish-Thirukumaran-1-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"Harrish Thirukumaran\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-45220\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Harrish Thirukumaran completed his Brock co-op degree in Political Science.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe program opened a lot of opportunities for me in the arts,\u201d said Milenkovski. \u201cIt demonstrated the business aspect of the arts that people don\u2019t see.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The growth each student experienced, the care the co-op staff provided and the career-readiness they now feel are common themes as they reflect on their co-op journey.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But all good things must come to an end. Each student is excited to graduate and to continue to apply the many skills they have learned in co-op.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For Thirukumaran, who is going on to pursue graduate studies in the fall, this will become most clear at Convocation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt will be a surreal moment to finally be graduating,\u201d he said. \u201cThe co-op terms made my studies longer than some of my colleagues, but it was a great advantage to get some work experience and understand my program in the real world.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Milenkovski, who is currently working at the Luminato Festival and the Toronto Fringe Festival, is similarly excited to finish her studies, and can\u2019t wait to see the people who helped her succeed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI can\u2019t wait to catch up with friends, professors and the co-op staff,\u201d she said. \u201cI have never been to a convocation before and I\u2019m very excited.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unfortunately, not everyone can make it back for the ceremony to celebrate their co-op success in person. Due to his current military service commitment in Thailand, Ngampornsukswadi is unable to attend.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI was a little bit upset when I found out that I will not be able to attend Convocation,\u201d he said. \u201cHowever, it feels great to be home and to celebrate my graduation with my family.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He concluded by passing on a message to the graduating class that speaks to the excellence of the University experience, the success of the co-op program and the camaraderie of the students who worked so hard to succeed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cMy time at Brock was one of the best times of my life.
