{"id":45181,"date":"2017-06-07T16:00:14","date_gmt":"2017-06-07T20:00:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=45181"},"modified":"2017-06-07T20:20:55","modified_gmt":"2017-06-08T00:20:55","slug":"brock-prof-honoured-for-focus-on-leadership-development","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2017\/06\/brock-prof-honoured-for-focus-on-leadership-development\/","title":{"rendered":"Brock prof honoured for focus on leadership development"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the eyes of Kirsty Spence, challenge and support go hand in hand in the classroom.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI believe it is important to explore the relationship between students\u2019 development and their leadership capacity,\u201d says the Sport Management associate professor.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is this strategic, student-centred approach that has won Spence the 2017 Teaching Excellence Award from the Faculty of Applied Health Sciences, which was awarded during Wednesday\u2019s Convocation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cEach year we recognize one faculty member for their teaching excellence,\u201d says Faculty of Applied Health Sciences Associate Dean Nancy Francis. \u201cThis year, the Teaching Advisory Committee selected Kirsty Spence because of her dedication to incorporating leadership development into her teaching methods. Her approaches consistently promote student engagement and nurture experiential learning.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Spence explains how she uses leadership development theory and organizational behaviour topics to enhance student learning.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cBy using various developmental frameworks, I have been able to incorporate various approaches and methods into my curricular design and programmatic review to promote students\u2019 learning and their leadership,\u201d she says. \u201cIn turn, this allows students to apply the practical skills they\u2019ve gained in experiential learning and service projects that impact the community in what are intended to be transformative and positive ways.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Spence stressed the need to treat students with respect and compassion from the moment they first walk into a classroom.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt\u2019s important to begin developing trust in the learning relationship from day one,\u201d she explains. \u201cI like to set clear expectations from the start and take the time to establish a rapport, particularly with first-year students.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Before coming to Brock 13 years ago, Spence taught elementary aged children in both public and private institutions in southern Ontario, Moscow, Russia and Taipei, Taiwan.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She knew teaching was the right career path, but it wasn\u2019t until she taught her first graduate-level class at the University of Massachusetts (Amherst) as a doctoral student that she discovered her passion for developing experiential learning curriculum.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2011, Spence became certified from Integral Coaching Canada, which has further allowed her to utilize her coaching skills to complement her teaching and help students to develop their cognitive and behavioural capacity, as well as their communication and decision-making skills.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In considering what the teaching excellence award means to her, Spence says she\u2019s \u201cextremely grateful to be a part of students\u2019 lives such that I see their significant development by the time they graduate.\u201d \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Spence, along with Sport Management Assistant Professor Shannon Kerwin, were awarded the\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2016\/05\/sport-management-researchers-receive-funding-for-leadership-study\/?utm_source=feedburner&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_campaign=Feed%3A+TheBrockNews+%28The+Brock+News%29\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chancellor\u2019s Chair for Teaching Excellence<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in 2016, which has enabled them to pursue longitudinal research focusing on students\u2019 ego development and occupational leadership efficacy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Also recognized Wednesday was Anthony Bogaert, who was honoured as the recipient of the 2017 Research Excellence Award of the Faculty of Applied Health Sciences for his outstanding contributions to human health.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_45154\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-45154\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-45154\" src=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/FAHS-Convocation-6-RS-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"Anthony Bogaert\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-45154\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Anthony Bogaert, a professor in the Department of Health Sciences, delivered the Convocation address during Wednesday&#8217;s Faculty of Applied Health Sciences morning ceremony.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe Applied Health Sciences Research Advisory Committee is impressed with Tony&#8217;s research achievements, international reputation and his outstanding contribution to science and Brock University,\u201d says Faculty of Applied Health Sciences Associate Dean, Nota Klentrou. \u201cWe are proud to have him in our Faculty.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bogaert is a professor in the Department of Health Sciences.
