{"id":45166,"date":"2017-06-07T17:00:53","date_gmt":"2017-06-07T21:00:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=45166"},"modified":"2017-06-07T17:00:12","modified_gmt":"2017-06-07T21:00:12","slug":"grandpa-and-grandson-are-so-close-they-graduated-together-at-brock-convocation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2017\/06\/grandpa-and-grandson-are-so-close-they-graduated-together-at-brock-convocation\/","title":{"rendered":"Grandpa and grandson are so close, they graduated together at Brock convocation"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span class=\"dropcap\">When he was eight years old, Jonah Mondloch walked into the library at Brock University with his grandfather Charles Burke to help him find some research books.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>This week \u2014 a decade and a half later \u2014 Jonah again walked through the University with his grandfather, but this time they had both just become Brock graduates.<\/p>\n<p>On Wednesday afternoon, Jonah, 22, and Charles, 78, graduated together in the Spring Convocation ceremony for the Faculty of Applied Health Sciences. Jonah completed his degree in Kinesiology in five years. His grandfather had been taking classes part time, one credit at a time for 15 years, but doubled up his course load this year so he could finish his degree in time to graduate with Jonah.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was just taking courses for fun,\u201d said Charles, \u201cbut as we got closer and closer, it became clear that we could graduate together.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_45172\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/Mondlochs-1-RS.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-45172\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-seenandheard wp-image-45172\" src=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/Mondlochs-1-RS-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-45172\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Jonah Mondloch, right, is hooded by his mother, Brock Prof. Cathy Mondloch, while his grandfather, Charles Burke, awaits his turn.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>There were many friends and family members in the Convocation crowd, but none closer than Brock Psychology Professor Cathy Mondloch \u2014 Jonah\u2019s mother and Charles\u2019 daughter \u2014who was on stage and beamed as she placed the graduation hoods over her loved ones\u2019 heads.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve been looking forward to it for a long time,\u201d said Mondloch, who started teaching at Brock in 2004, not long after her dad enrolled in classes. \u201cTo see both of them on stage, and to be up there with them and part of that, is really unique.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mondloch described Jonah and Charles as good friends who share a love of baseball, golf and other sports.<\/p>\n<p>The pair actually took three classes together over the years \u2014 including one in Jonah\u2019s first year, when he was too embarrassed to sit next to his grandfather.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe sat on the left side and I sat on the right,\u201d Charles said with a laugh.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI had friends from high school in that class, so we all sat together,\u201d said Jonah, whose Brock experience has included being on the varsity Badgers curling team.<\/p>\n<p>That embarrassment, however, was quickly replaced by collaboration and friendly competition. In one shared class they did a joint presentation together, and they often compared grades against each other.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI remember going to his house for dinner one day. I walked in and he was wearing a cardboard sign around his neck with a big 89 on it, because he had beaten me on an assignment or an exam,\u201d Jonah said, admitting his grandfather beat his final mark in two out of the three classes they took together.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_45174\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/Mondlochs-3-RS.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-45174\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-45174 size-seenandheard\" src=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/Mondlochs-3-RS-300x208.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"208\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-45174\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Charles Burke\u00a0is congratulated by Brock University Chancellor Shirley Cheechoo Wednesday afternoon.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s a good chance I may not have got a degree if Jonah wasn\u2019t here,\u201d said Charles, a retired accountant who still serves as Director of Finance for the United Way of St. Catharines. \u201cI was just doing it for fun.
