{"id":45008,"date":"2017-06-01T11:47:14","date_gmt":"2017-06-01T15:47:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=45008"},"modified":"2018-07-17T13:46:05","modified_gmt":"2018-07-17T17:46:05","slug":"heart-gardens-highlight-history-of-residential-schools","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2017\/06\/heart-gardens-highlight-history-of-residential-schools\/","title":{"rendered":"Heart gardens highlight history of residential schools"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"page-intro\"><b><\/b><span class=\"dropcap\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Each heart carefully staked into the soil is a sign of remembrance and a promise never to forget.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The colourful creations now lining the flowerbeds around the Brock campus each represent the memory of a child lost to the residential school system, while also offering a commitment to reconciliation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">More than 600 hearts were planted Wednesday evening by students in Sherri Vansickle\u2019s Introduction to Indigenous Studies class as part of the national Honouring Memories, Planting Dreams project.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The initiative is one of many set to mark June as Aboriginal Month at Brock.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The month-long celebration, endorsed by President Tom Traves and senior administration, will culminate with National Aboriginal Day on June 21 with eye-catching displays on campus and online education promoted through Brock\u2019s website.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_45010\" style=\"width: 376px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-45010\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-45010\" src=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/Heart-Garden-4-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"Sherri Vansickle\" width=\"366\" height=\"275\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-45010\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Sherri Vansickle, a lecturer with Brock\u2019s Tecumseh Centre For Aboriginal Research and Education, and student Nancy Kumar helped to plant hearts in Brock flowerbeds Wednesday in memory of children lost to the residential school system.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This marks the second time in three years Vansickle\u2019s students have planted heart gardens on campus.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When passersby see the creations, the lecturer with Brock\u2019s <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tecumseh Centre for Aboriginal Research and Education<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> hopes they will stop and reflect on the need for continued reconciliation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe need to keep it at the forefront of our minds and continue to work towards it,\u201d Vansickle said, calling it an \u201congoing process\u201d meant to help survivors and their families heal.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Each heart is made to look unique, representing the individual children and their different joys and scars. They are covered with stickers of trucks, dinosaurs, princesses and other traditional childhood staples.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cOur residential school survivors didn\u2019t get to play with those things,\u201d Vansickle said. \u201cThey didn\u2019t have a stash of toys. They were barely fed. Your chances of dying in a residential school as a child were greater than dying as an adult in the Second World War.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The eight students who contributed to the project brought on board family members and friends to help craft boxes upon boxes of hearts that will stand tall for the next two weeks.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Third-year sociology student Nancy Kumar was so inspired by the project that she hopes to introduce a garden at her workplace in Toronto.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She would like to see other organizations, businesses and residents taking the initiative to help share the history and help others become informed.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_45011\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-45011\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-45011\" src=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/Heart-Garden-5-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"Heart Garden\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-45011\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Students in an Introduction to Indigenous Studies course recently planted hearts in Brock flowerbeds to represent the memory of children lost to the residential school system.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThere are so many young people who never learned about residential schools.
