{"id":44953,"date":"2017-05-30T15:24:20","date_gmt":"2017-05-30T19:24:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=44953"},"modified":"2017-05-30T16:13:21","modified_gmt":"2017-05-30T20:13:21","slug":"brock-alumnus-embarks-on-arctic-trek","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2017\/05\/brock-alumnus-embarks-on-arctic-trek\/","title":{"rendered":"Brock alumnus embarks on Arctic trek"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b><\/b><span class=\"dropcap\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As modern-day voyageur Adam Shoalts (BA \u201909) ventures to the Arctic this spring on an amazing one-man expedition, he\u2019s doing so with signature red Brock gear that\u2019s sure to stand out against the tundra.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In mid-May, the 31-year-old Pelham native departed his home in Sudbury, intent on honouring the country he loves dearly with an epic adventure.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To commemorate Canada\u2019s 150<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">th<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> birthday, Shoalts plans to spend five months walking and canoeing thousands of kilometres across the Yukon, Northwest Territories and Nunavut. And as he traverses the great northern landscape, following a route from the Alaska border to Hudson\u2019s Bay, he\u2019ll be warmed \u2014 literally \u2014 by reminders from his alma mater.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Brock University is a co-sponsor of Shoalts\u2019 exhibition, contributing lightweight, quick-dry outerwear to help during his Ulyssean excursion through forest, muskeg and tundra.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_44956\" style=\"width: 377px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-44956\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-44956 \" src=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/Adam-Shoalts-muskeg-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"Adam Shoalts\" width=\"367\" height=\"275\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-44956\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Adam Shoalts (BA &#8217;09) will traverse diverse landscapes during his 4,000-kilometre trek across the Arctic that began this spring. (Photo credit: Alexia Wiatr)<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While dreaming up trip possibilities to mark Canada\u2019s milestone birthday, Shoalts began researching a canoeing trek that took teams of travellers from Vancouver to Halifax in 1967 in celebration of the country\u2019s first 100 years.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Recreating that journey was appealing, but Canada has changed a lot in 50 years, and today that original \u201967 path would basically bring him to a Tim Hortons every third day. The intrusion of civilization and pop culture were not in his game plan.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cTo up the ante and keep the route in the wilderness, I figured I\u2019d take it to a new extreme and do it across the Arctic,\u201d he said in the days leading up to his sendoff.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shoalts hopes the expedition will encourage Canadians to \u201cthink more about the country\u2019s northern wilderness and what kind of future it might have over the next 150 years.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Few people realize the \u201cincredibly diverse\u201d landscapes the country\u2019s remote north has to offer, he said, with most envisioning a land filled with ice, snow and little else.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI\u2019ll be covering about 4,000 kilometres across a variety of landscapes: the spectacular peaks of the Richardson Mountains, low-lying muskeg, black spruce and tamarack forests, high-walled granite canyons, raging whitewater rivers, slow-flowing muddy streams, sandy deserts, lush tundra cloaked in wild flowers, flat plains, rolling hills, rugged outcrops, and yes, quite a bit of snow and ice,\u201d Shoalts said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With a route that, by necessity, is mainly upstream, the adventurer will brave the elements, experiencing temperatures expected to fluctuate from -15 C to 25 C.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI\u2019ll be travelling at a pretty frantic pace, so there won\u2019t be much time to dwell on anything \u2014 this is a race against the seasons,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cMy biggest concern is ice conditions and adverse winds. Those are two major factors outside my control that could prevent me from reaching my goal.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/jt42wBoCldE\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As a self-proclaimed fan of taking the road less travelled, the Brock alumnus left the comforts of home both prepared and excited for the challenge ahead, as well as thankful for those who have stood behind his dreams of exploration.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cTo have the support of my old University means a lot,\u201d Shoalts said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cSome people may think, \u20184,000 kilometres alone across the Arctic? That\u2019s crazy!\u2019 so to have Brock step up and give me a vote of confidence in what I\u2019m doing is very welcome.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shoalts said he\u2019s thrilled to be able to \u201cshow a bit of school pride\u201d throughout his journey in hopes of inspiring the next generation of Brock students to chase their dreams, \u201cno matter how unlikely they might seem.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When thinking back to his time on campus, Shoalts\u2019 mind naturally drifts to the University\u2019s Map, Data and GIS Library.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI\u2019d have to thank the map library and the excellent map librarians there, who may not remember me, but were always extremely patient and helpful when I would come in to pore over topographic maps when planning expeditions,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shoalts continues to apply those skills, doing extensive research while planning his travel routes, studying satellite imagery and maps closely to commit as much to memory as possible.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThat saves time in the field and encourages a deeper connection to the land,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He will be travelling as light as possible, with only the bare essentials strapped to his back and contained within his 15-foot solo prospector canoe.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition to his expedition backpack, he\u2019ll have two watertight plastic barrels crammed with food rations, camera equipment and other gear.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cMinus the 53-pound canoe, my gear weighs around 75 pounds,\u201d he said, \u201cnot counting, when fully replenished, around 100 pounds of food rations, which diminishes with each day until I reach one of my re-supply points.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Also within his pack are a few good books, that, along with the wildlife he\u2019s likely to encounter, are sure to keep him company.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shoalts found his love for reading and learning was nurtured during his time at Brock.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI really soaked up the atmosphere; listening to lectures, engaging in seminar discussions and, my favourite, just wandering the library and perusing the shelves almost at random for books that interest me,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although he felt the bookish behaviour \u201cmight sound strange coming from someone who does extreme adventure,\u201d Shoalts thinks the academic grounding he received at the University \u201chelped me to bring things into sharper focus, and strike the right balance on my journeys between adventure and research.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Once Shoalts returns to Ontario in late September or early October, he intends to share tales of his expedition\u00a0through various Brock speaking engagements.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cHopefully I can help inspire others in the Brock community to chase their dreams by letting them see that I started in the same place \u2014 from an undergad sitting in a Brock lecture hall to alone in a canoe traversing Canada\u2019s Arctic,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIf I can do that, anyone can achieve their dreams.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shoalts, a Fellow of the Royal Canadian Geographical Society, has written two books and published more than 100 articles on various subjects related to exploration and the environment.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He was honoured in March with the young author\u2019s Speaker\u2019s Book Award from Ontario legislature Speaker Dave Levac.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He was recognized for his latest book,<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Alone Against the North, An Expedition into the Unknown<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which details his 2012 expedition to Hudson Bay Lowlands, where he canoed along the uncharted waters of the Again River.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Receiving the award was a \u201cwelcome surprise,\u201d Shoalts said. \u201cI was happy just to make the shortlist.
