{"id":44912,"date":"2017-05-26T16:23:02","date_gmt":"2017-05-26T20:23:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=44912"},"modified":"2017-06-01T09:21:20","modified_gmt":"2017-06-01T13:21:20","slug":"make-canada-a-world-leader-in-renewable-energy-production-and-use-national-research-group","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2017\/05\/make-canada-a-world-leader-in-renewable-energy-production-and-use-national-research-group\/","title":{"rendered":"Make Canada a world leader in renewable energy production and use: national research group"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span class=\"dropcap\">A Brock biologist is among a large group of university researchers calling on the Canadian government to become a world leader in the production and use of renewable energy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The Sustainable Canada Dialogues research group made up of 71 researchers, including Brock\u2019s Liette Vasseur, released the <em><a href=\"http:\/\/sustainablecanadadialogues.ca\/en\/scd\/energy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Re-Energizing Canada: Pathways to a Low-Carbon Future<\/a><\/em> report Friday, May 26 that says Canada can use the \u201cglobal low-carbon energy transition\u201d as an economic engine for the country.<\/p>\n<p>The report outlines ways Canada could speed up its shift to low-carbon energy systems from its current reliance on fossil fuels.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re highly reliant on oil and gas,\u201d says Vasseur, a UNESCO Chair in Community Sustainability: from Local to Global. \u201cWe need to look at changing the way that we are working: how we move away from oil, gas, coal and other fossil fuels and move toward forms of low-carbon electrification like hydro-electricity and other renewable energy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The researchers identify three ways Canada could transform itself into a low-carbon economy:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Cut down on the demand for energy through conservation and efficiency<\/li>\n<li>Increase electrification and switch to electricity that emits low levels of carbon<\/li>\n<li>Replace high-carbon petroleum-based fuels with low-carbon options<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u201cThe future competitiveness and success of companies will be influenced by their readiness to engage in the low-carbon energy transition,\u201d says the report.<\/p>\n<p>Sources of alternative energy include: hydroelectricity; solar, wind, wave and tidal power; geothermal power; and biofuels produced from plant materials, animal waste and other organic material.<\/p>\n<p>Vasseur contributed to sections of the report that deal with social acceptability, social justice and culture, and how these are key factors in determining what Canada\u2019s energy systems will look like in the future.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s the issue of changing lifestyles,\u201d says Vasseur. \u201cPeople in general have a fear of change and might resist using new sources of energy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She says people with lower incomes tend to bear a disproportionately higher cost of clean energy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe already know the debate that occurred in Ontario when electricity prices went up. If you can\u2019t afford it, you\u2019ll have a tougher time,\u201d says Vasseur.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne of the suggestions is how to better distribute the revenue coming from new energy sources so that it is more fair, such as a rebate given to families that have lower incomes,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<p>The report lays out a plan that will result in Canada slashing its 2005 carbon emission levels by 80 per cent by 2050. The presence of carbon dioxide has been <a href=\"https:\/\/climate.nasa.gov\/evidence\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">steadily and sharply increasing<\/a> since the 1950s as a result of burning fossil fuels and other human activities. Carbon dioxide is one of the greenhouse gases that trap heat in the atmosphere, increasing the Earth\u2019s surface temperature.<\/p>\n<p>Vasseur and the other authors of the <a href=\"http:\/\/sustainablecanadadialogues.ca\/en\/scd\/energy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Re-Energizing Canada: Pathways to a Low-Carbon Future<\/em><\/a> say the steps they\u2019re suggesting will help meet a goal set by 196 countries in 2015 to avoid a global temperature increase of two degrees celsius from pre-industrial levels. <a href=\"https:\/\/climate.nasa.gov\/news\/2458\/why-a-half-degree-temperature-rise-is-a-big-deal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Scientists report that a two-degree rise<\/a> would have a range of serious impacts, including increases in heat waves, rainstorms, water levels and the total destruction of tropical coral reefs.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A Brock biologist is among a large group of university researchers calling on the Canadian government to become a world leader in the production and use of renewable energy.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":20,"featured_media":28735,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":[],"categories":[3319,41,1,5],"tags":[794,3231,511,5377],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/44912"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/20"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=44912"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/44912\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/28735"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=44912"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=44912"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=44912"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
