{"id":44841,"date":"2017-05-19T14:26:27","date_gmt":"2017-05-19T18:26:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=44841"},"modified":"2017-05-19T14:26:28","modified_gmt":"2017-05-19T18:26:28","slug":"yonge-st-riot-documentary-screening-tuesday","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2017\/05\/yonge-st-riot-documentary-screening-tuesday\/","title":{"rendered":"Yonge St. Riot documentary screening Tuesday"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A Niagara screening of Brock University professor Simon Black&#8217;s documentary on the 25th anniversary of the Yonge Street riot will be held Tuesday, May 23.<\/p>\n<p>The film, <em>It Takes A Riot: Race, Rebellion, Reform, <\/em>was first released in Toronto, and will be shown at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Niagara Artists Centre on St. Paul Street in St. Catharines.<\/p>\n<p>Black,\u00a0BAssistant Professor in the Centre for Labour Studies,\u00a0says the documentary asks the question: \u2018What does it take for black people to get justice in this society?\u2019<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile media coverage of the day focused on property damage, it was the confrontation of young people with the police that tells the true story of May 4,\u201d he says. \u201cPolice were shooting and killing black people with impunity in the City of Toronto, never mind the daily indignities suffered by black people as they were racially profiled and harassed by police.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot much has changed. The question remains: why must things reach a crisis point before government addresses systemic anti-black racism?\u201d says Black.<\/p>\n<p>Black co-wrote the film with Howard Grandison, who also directed. The two, along with Assistant Professor of Social Work at Ryerson Idil Abdillahi, produced the film.
