{"id":44798,"date":"2017-05-16T16:44:51","date_gmt":"2017-05-16T20:44:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=44798"},"modified":"2017-05-16T16:45:21","modified_gmt":"2017-05-16T20:45:21","slug":"faculty-of-ed-to-get-administrative-makeover","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2017\/05\/faculty-of-ed-to-get-administrative-makeover\/","title":{"rendered":"Faculty of Ed to get administrative makeover"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Brock\u2019s Senate has approved restructuring the Faculty of Education (FoE) into a one-department entity designed to streamline decision-making within the Faculty and improve the delivery of programs to students.<\/p>\n<p>The changes, which take effect on July 1, 2018, represent the first major updating of the FoE in nearly half a century, since formerly free-standing \u201cteacher\u2019s colleges\u201d in Ontario were folded into the university system.<\/p>\n<p>The restructuring does not change any academic programs, but will administratively merge two departments (Teacher Education; and Graduate and Undergraduate Studies) and two centres (Continuing Teacher Education; and Adult Education and Community Outreach) into the new Department of Educational Studies.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_44800\" style=\"width: 338px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-44800\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-44800 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/David-Siegel.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"328\" height=\"307\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-44800\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">David Siegel: &#8220;An intra-departmental sphere simplifies and expedites decision making.\u201d<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The Tecumseh Centre for Aboriginal Research and Education will remain a distinct entity within the FoE, continuing to deliver teacher education programs for Indigenous students, as well as Indigenous-focused courses for all students.<\/p>\n<p>This will be the first time the University\u00a0has had a Faculty with a single department, and with 55 faculty members, it will be the largest department at Brock.<\/p>\n<p>Interim Dean of Education David Siegel says the model is new to Brock, but is already common at faculties of education all across Canada. He said the structure increases opportunities for faculty members to work together in the interest of students, including to develop new programs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe previous structure worked very well when it was developed in the 1970s,\u201d said Siegel, \u201cbut in 2017 it is clear that the Faculty would function better, in terms of program delivery and long-term planning, if the two departments were combined.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He said program delivery and decision-making about programs will be improved.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Faculty of Education is a model transdisciplinary unit.
