<\/b>It will be a relay race like no other \u2014 and all for the benefit of local children.<\/span><\/p>\n

Brock is putting together a team, and looking for additional participants and donors, for the second annual PlasmaCar race hosted by Niagara Children\u2019s Centre.<\/span><\/p>\n

The race, to be held May 31, wraps up the organization\u2019s month-long Help Kids Shine campaign.<\/span><\/p>\n

Members of the Brock community are encouraged to fundraise and create teams of four to participate in the relay-style event that will have drivers navigate a track on small, manually powered PlasmaCars \u2014 drivable toys propelled by wiggling the steering wheel.<\/span><\/p>\n

Each participant will race to hit the half-track mark before passing the car to a teammate, all while competing to be the first team to reach the finish line.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Student Life and Community Experience department is leading the Brock team this year and has set a $500 fundraising goal.<\/span><\/p>\n

Last year, the centre was able to raise $104,000 through the Help Kids Shine campaign.<\/span><\/p>\n

A goal of $115,000 has been set for 2017 to support an expansion of programs and services for Niagara families.<\/span><\/p>\n

The organization currently supports 3,300 children and youths with physical, developmental and communicative delays and disabilities, and has a waitlist of more than 650 people. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cAwareness events like this give the community a greater sense of what we do,\u201d said Marla Smith (BSc \u201905), a Brock alumna and Director of Development at the Children\u2019s Centre.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe help children who have a wide spectrum of needs and when the community gets to hear some of the different stories that we showcase, they understand the breadth of our services and their\u00a0complexities.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The PlasmaCar race takes place from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Niagara Ball Hockey Club.<\/span><\/p>\n
