{"id":44692,"date":"2017-05-04T14:30:17","date_gmt":"2017-05-04T18:30:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=44692"},"modified":"2017-05-05T14:08:53","modified_gmt":"2017-05-05T18:08:53","slug":"classics-event-brings-archaeology-and-chariot-racing-back-to-brock","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2017\/05\/classics-event-brings-archaeology-and-chariot-racing-back-to-brock\/","title":{"rendered":"Classics event brings archaeology and chariot racing back to Brock"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>You need not be concerned if you see gladiators and chariots in the Thistle hallways this week.<\/p>\n<p>Nearly 300 high school students are at Brock University for the annual Ontario Student Classics Conference, which runs until Saturday and wraps up with a chariot race.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re honoured to be hosting the conference again at Brock,\u201d says department chair Professor Angus Smith. \u201cIt\u2019s a great chance for the high school students to celebrate their interests in Classics and the ancient world.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The conference nurtures a deeper understanding of the classical world by bringing together students and teachers from across the province in social events and competitions.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_44695\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/OSCC2016-4-Ontario-Classics-Association-copy.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-44695\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-seenandheard wp-image-44695\" src=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/OSCC2016-4-Ontario-Classics-Association-copy-300x221.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"221\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-44695\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Students at the Ontario Students Classics Conference take part in a simulated archaeological dig behind DeCew residence.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The OSCC is also an important recruiting opportunity for the Department of Classics.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a great chance for us to show these students what a great place Brock would be to come pursue these interests,\u201d Smith says.<\/p>\n<p>The conference aims to support <em>mens sana in corpore sano \u2014 <\/em>a healthy mind in a healthy body \u2014 through friendly competitions.<\/p>\n<p>Students compete across three categories: academic, athletic and creative. The academic competition includes contests in written Greek and Latin, vocabulary and derivatives, sight translations, mythology, Greek and Roman history and geography.<\/p>\n<p>Athletic competitions reflect the sports practised by the ancient Greeks and Romans including discus (frisbee), slinging, mini marathons, foot races and swimming.<\/p>\n<p>The highlight of the annual conference is the chariot race, scheduled for Saturday at 2:30 p.m., when each school races a chariot they\u2019ve made around the Brock traffic circle.<\/p>\n<p>Creative competitions encompass visual arts, drama and fashion, with students displaying artwork, audiovisual projects and computer work and performing skits for their peers.
