{"id":44690,"date":"2017-05-04T13:19:29","date_gmt":"2017-05-04T17:19:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=44690"},"modified":"2018-05-24T16:18:19","modified_gmt":"2018-05-24T20:18:19","slug":"brocks-makerspace-brewing-interest-at-downtown-cafe","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2017\/05\/brocks-makerspace-brewing-interest-at-downtown-cafe\/","title":{"rendered":"Brock\u2019s Makerspace brewing interest at downtown caf\u00e9"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b><\/b><span class=\"dropcap\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Technology from Brock\u2019s Makerspace is headed to downtown St. Catharines for a community event later this month.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Maker Culture Showcase will take over Mahtay Caf\u00e9 on Thursday, May 18 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. in order to highlight innovative technology and drum up interest from the public.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The event is meant to not only make the community aware of the resources available at the University\u2019s Makerspace, but to also allow like-minded people to connect with one another, said IT Support Technician Tabitha Lewis.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The hope, she said, is that the showcase will act as a catalyst for future Maker Culture events.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Makerspaces are a place for people \u201cto learn, to experiment, get hands-on experience and to use technology you wouldn\u2019t necessarily have access to at home,\u201d said Jonathan Younker, Head of Brock\u2019s Library Systems and Technology.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cFor some makerspaces, it\u2019s power tools or industrial equipment. Ours is more of a clean makerspace with more digital elements \u2014 3D scanning, 3D printing and video editing.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Getting involved in 3D printing, modelling and scanning is \u201ceasier than ever before,\u201d he said, while encouraging people to attend the free event to learn more.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Technology will be provided by the James A. Gibson Library\u2019s Makerspace, Marilyn I. Walker School of Fine and Performing Arts, Youth University, Faculty of Education, Centre for Digital Humanities and BioLinc.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stations will include virtual reality headsets, paper circuits, 3D printers and musical instruments made from 3D printed parts.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There will be a Sphero Ball, a robotic gaming device controlled with a tilt, touch or swing of a smartphone or tablet; Makey Makey, an invention kit that turns everyday objects into touchpads; and littleBits Electronics, a platform of easy-to-use electronic building blocks that empower anyone to create inventions, large and small.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition to a variety of technology, the event will feature vendors connected to maker culture.
