{"id":44654,"date":"2017-05-02T15:56:51","date_gmt":"2017-05-02T19:56:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=44654"},"modified":"2025-01-29T09:07:02","modified_gmt":"2025-01-29T14:07:02","slug":"brock-students-present-at-international-forum-on-quality-and-safety-in-healthcare","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2017\/05\/brock-students-present-at-international-forum-on-quality-and-safety-in-healthcare\/","title":{"rendered":"Brock students present at International Forum on Quality and Safety in Healthcare"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span class=\"dropcap\">Caitlin Muhl has long had her sights set on a paediatrics career, so when she heard about Brock\u2019s I-EQUIP program, she knew it was another step in the right direction.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Muhl, a fourth-year Health Sciences student and recipient of the <a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2017\/04\/presidents-surgite-award-winners-honoured\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2016-17 President\u2019s Surgite Award<\/a>, recently joined Goodman Masters of Business Administration student <a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2017\/04\/student-leadership-commended-at-goodman-recognition-night\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Blair Hutchings<\/a> in London, England to attend the International Forum on Quality and Safety in Healthcare.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_44656\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/Blair-Hutchings.jpeg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-44656\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-seenandheard wp-image-44656\" src=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/Blair-Hutchings-300x273.jpeg\" alt=\"Blair Hutchings\" width=\"300\" height=\"273\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-44656\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Blair Hutchings with Colonel Chris Hadfield.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The two presented information on Brock\u2019s I-EQUIP (Interprofessional Education for Quality Improvement Program) at the prestigious healthcare conference, which brought together 3,400 people from 70 countries<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI love helping children and being involved in community initiatives,\u201d says Muhl. \u201cBy second year, I wanted to find a way to balance my understanding of public health with patient perspectives and really make a difference\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Already enrolled in <a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/ccee\/career-education\/med-plus\/#speaker-series\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Med plus<\/a>, when she heard about I-EQUIP, she knew it would get her even closer to her goal of working in a hospital.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI-EQUIP stood out because I like learning about the healthcare system and wanted to engage in experiences that would allow me to be an excellent future health professional,\u201d says Muhl.<\/p>\n<p>With a background in health sciences and now pursing an MBA, Hutchings felt the experience she could gain in I-EQUIP would help her understand her career path while also contributing to the community.<\/p>\n<p>It wasn\u2019t long before Muhl and Hutchings started working on their projects with staff in the Niagara Health Children\u2019s Health Unit in St. Catharines on an I-EQUIP project which used the Canadian Paediatric Trigger Tool to inform real time quality improvement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTrigger tools are used to uncover certain events, like high rates of unplanned readmissions, gaps in care, a patient fall or a medication error,\u201d explains Muhl. \u201cThe goal is to identify these triggers and make improvements.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Muhl and Hutchings were responsible for collecting data, developing a manual for how the tool could be used within the system and co-training a core team of nurses and physicians on how to use the tool effectively to identify patient safety issues.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCaitlin and Blair\u2019s work on pediatric patient safety earned them a tremendous opportunity to present at the top international conference on health quality,\u201d says Health Sciences Associate Professor and I-EQUIP Director Madelyn Law.<\/p>\n<p>She said the two students worked hard on their project and received funding from BUSU, an MBA student grant and the Faculty of Applied Health Sciences to be able to attend the conference.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis conference was an opportunity to get feedback, learn about unique programs and share information about Brock and I-EQUIP,\u201d Muhl said. \u201cIt was inspiring to hear from healthcare professionals who have been doing this for a lot longer than I have.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Muhl will graduate in June and has been accepted to Brock\u2019s Master of Public Health program for September.
