{"id":44640,"date":"2017-05-01T17:37:17","date_gmt":"2017-05-01T21:37:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=44640"},"modified":"2017-08-29T16:14:50","modified_gmt":"2017-08-29T20:14:50","slug":"brock-alumni-faculty-and-staff-among-2017-st-catharines-arts-awards-nominees","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2017\/05\/brock-alumni-faculty-and-staff-among-2017-st-catharines-arts-awards-nominees\/","title":{"rendered":"Brock alumni, faculty and staff among St. Catharines Arts Awards nominees"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b><\/b><span class=\"dropcap\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Several members of the Brock community are being recognized for their impact on the local arts scene.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Brock alumni, staff and faculty have earned a number of nominations for this year\u2019s St. Catharines Arts Awards, which recognize outstanding contributions to the arts in the Garden City.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2017\/01\/photo-exhibit-launched-by-brock-alumna\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Visual artist Lauren Regier (BA \u201914)<\/a>, costume designer Jo Pacinda (BA \u201913) and the <a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2017\/01\/brock-alumni-showcase-talents-in-the-bacchae\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Twitches &amp; Itches Theatre group<\/a>, run mainly by alumni, are among those in the running for the 2017 Emerging Artist award.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gordon Cleland, a professor with Brock\u2019s Department of Music and principal cellist with the Niagara Symphony, and Brock dramatic arts professor Danielle Wilson, co-founder and co-artistic director of Stolen Theatre Collective, have both been nominated for the Established Artist Award.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Earning a nomination in the Making a Difference category is Gregory Betts, a poet and professor with the Department of English Language and Literature, and Marcie Bronson, Acting Director and Curator at Rodman Hall Art Centre.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rodman Hall itself has also been nominated in the Arts in Education category.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Seeing that high level of recognition bestowed upon members of the Brock community creates\u00a0a sense of pride in anyone\u00a0<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">affiliated with the Marilyn I. Walker School of Fine and Performing Arts (MIWSFPA), said MIWSFPA Director David Vivian.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The accomplishments of alumni help to reaffirm the work that staff and faculty of the arts school are doing to support the arts in Niagara, he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Regier, a graduate from Brock\u2019s Department of Visual Arts, feels participation in the local arts scene is key.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cSome of the best people and institutions in St. Catharines have positioned themselves to be generously receptive of new ideas, artwork and dialogue,\u201d she said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWhen it comes to contributing to the arts community post-graduation, it\u2019s our willingness to attend talks and shows by people we don\u2019t know, or to introduce and guide newcomers \u2014 that truly makes one an accessible and valued member of the cultural community.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Regier is being recognized for her work, which explores the relationship between nature and machines through photography, video, performance and installation art.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pacinda, a Brock theatre graduate and aspiring costume designer who works with a number of theatre companies in Niagara, has always dreamed of not just starting but building her theatre career in the region.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThis nomination means I\u2019m headed on the right path with that,\u201d she said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Her recent work includes company costumer and design assistant for Essential Collective Theatre and wardrobe assistant for Yellowdoor Theatre Project, Foster Festival and Twitches &amp;
