{"id":44489,"date":"2017-04-13T11:39:27","date_gmt":"2017-04-13T15:39:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=44489"},"modified":"2017-04-13T11:39:27","modified_gmt":"2017-04-13T15:39:27","slug":"brock-professor-appointed-president-of-milton-society-of-america","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2017\/04\/brock-professor-appointed-president-of-milton-society-of-america\/","title":{"rendered":"Brock professor appointed president of Milton Society of America"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Elizabeth Sauer, Professor in Brock&#8217;s\u00a0Department of English Language and Literature, is keeping John Milton\u2019s legacy alive. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Milton, a poet, \u2018man of letters\u2019 and civil servant for the Commonwealth of England under Oliver Cromwell, was a driving force behind Western Europe\u2019s Reformation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This year marks the 500th anniversary of the movement \u2014 a defining moment in church and political history.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Earlier this year, Sauer was appointed president of the<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/miltonsociety.org\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Milton Society of America (MSA)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a community of around 500 scholars and researchers from around the globe.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe poems Milton wrote have laid the groundwork for a lot of modern thinking,\u201d says Sauer, who is the MSA\u2019s first female Canadian president.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAnybody who\u2019s interested in theology probably has to grapple with Milton,\u201d she explains. \u201cAnybody who\u2019s interested in history, especially in the championing of liberty in the personal, religious, civic, political and domestic spheres needs to take on Milton.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cEven the American revolution was influenced quite heavily by the thought of Milton over a century beforehand.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of Sauer\u2019s many tasks will be to oversee the MSA\u2019s 70th-year jubilee campaign, which includes a fundraising effort to support young scholars to pursue Milton studies.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sauer is recognized as a world expert on Milton. In 2014, she published<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2014\/03\/brock-prof-explores-john-milton%E2%80%99s-discussions-on-toleration-nationalism-in-new-book\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Milton, Toleration and Nationhood<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a seminal book that examines Milton\u2019s many works \u2013 the most famous including Areopagitica and Paradise Lost \u2013 to see how Milton developed concepts of toleration and liberty that informed discourses of English nation-building.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The book was the result of Sauer\u2019s Killam Fellowship, an award that comes with two years of funding to focus exclusively on one\u2019s area of research.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Killam Fellowship is a highly prestigious honour.
