{"id":44313,"date":"2017-04-03T14:37:43","date_gmt":"2017-04-03T18:37:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=44313"},"modified":"2017-04-03T14:39:36","modified_gmt":"2017-04-03T18:39:36","slug":"participants-needed-for-national-volunteer-week","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2017\/04\/participants-needed-for-national-volunteer-week\/","title":{"rendered":"Participants needed for National Volunteer Week"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b><\/b><span class=\"dropcap\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Brock University is encouraging its staff and faculty to lend a helping hand as part of a national campaign happening later this month.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The University will again be participating in National Volunteer Week, urging its employees to spend half a day donating their time.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is the third year Brock has gotten on board with the initiative and the hope is to recruit more volunteers than ever to help out at various community organizations over a two-day period, said Kathryn Walker, the University\u2019s Manager of Health Management and Wellness.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Volunteer opportunities are available on Wednesday, April 26 and Thursday, April 27, from either\u00a09 a.m. to noon or from 1 to 4 p.m.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Participants are asked to register for their preferred time slot after receiving supervisor approval. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/hr\/training\/focus\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Registration can be done online<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Deadline to register is Tuesday, April 11.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Participants will have an opportunity following registration to select their preferences from a list of partnering organizations looking for volunteers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe\u2019re expecting to have a mixture of outdoor and indoor tasks,\u201d Walker said. Options will be available for people of all abilities.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the past, Brock&#8217;s National Volunteer Week participants have spent time doing community cleanup, painting, assisting at food banks and providing general maintenance through various organizations, such as Habitat for Humanity, Community Care of St. Catharines and Thorold, and Heartland Forest.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cEvery year we\u2019re looking to build on this initiative,\u201d Walker said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Brock\u2019s inaugural year drew out 21 volunteers, which increased to 40 volunteers in 2016.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Walker is hoping for record-setting attendance this time around, with the number of registrants at least doubling over last year.
