{"id":44281,"date":"2017-03-30T12:38:02","date_gmt":"2017-03-30T16:38:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=44281"},"modified":"2017-03-30T16:44:22","modified_gmt":"2017-03-30T20:44:22","slug":"forum-crosses-disciplines-to-talk-about-planets-future","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2017\/03\/forum-crosses-disciplines-to-talk-about-planets-future\/","title":{"rendered":"Forum crosses disciplines to talk about planet\u2019s future"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Changes to the environment and what it means for the future prompted discussion between scholars from several Brock University disciplines during a recent forum.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Scientific and Posthumanist Perspectives on the Anthropocene invited five Brock speakers together for an afternoon of transdisciplinary discussion on Monday, March 27.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The term anthropocene was unveiled in 2000 to represent a new unit of geological time in which human activities have finally overwhelmed the planet as an operating system.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The forum \u201cstarted a conversation among researchers at Brock interested in this seminal time period and the myriad of ways it is being studied,\u201d said Ryan Plummer, Director of Brock\u2019s Environmental Sustainability Research Centre (ESRC), who co-hosted the event alongside Christine Daigle, Director of Brock\u2019s Posthumanism Research Institute (PRI).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The event, which focused on how changes to the planet impact humans and other beings, was the first collaboration between the ESRC and PRI. The two research centres signed a memorandum of understanding in February, committing to pursuing joint research projects, workshops and conferences.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Scholarly discourse across disciplines is \u201cwhere exciting breakthroughs occur,\u201d Plummer said. \u201cWith respect to our planetary future, there can be no more important issue for engagement.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The event featured professors David Fancy (Dramatic Arts), Terrance McDonald (Interdisciplinary Humanities), Adam Dickinson (English Language and Literature), Martin Head (Earth Sciences), and Liette Vasseur (Biological Sciences).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It was an opportunity to not only engage in discussion with scholars from three of Brock\u2019s academic Faculties, but to also take in a diverse range of perspectives on the topic, Plummer said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fancy was intrigued by how people from different backgrounds at the University approached the question of how humans are affecting the environment and what can be done to develop different relationships with the planet.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vasseur felt the discussion helped with efforts to try and define what anthropocene means for different disciplines and how it can be interpreted.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With a successful first discussion on the topic, there\u2019s potential the group will return to the table in the future to continue its dialogue.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Changes to the environment and what it means for the future prompted discussion between scholars from several Brock University disciplines during a recent forum.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":38,"featured_media":44282,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":[],"categories":[7,37,41,1,4,38],"tags":[4424,49,4035,109,150,76,296,4034,5119],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/44281"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/38"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=44281"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/44281\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/44282"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=44281"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=44281"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=44281"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
