{"id":44231,"date":"2017-03-28T13:58:31","date_gmt":"2017-03-28T17:58:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=44231"},"modified":"2017-03-28T14:08:07","modified_gmt":"2017-03-28T18:08:07","slug":"finals-set-for-three-minute-thesis-challenge","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2017\/03\/finals-set-for-three-minute-thesis-challenge\/","title":{"rendered":"Finals set for Three Minute Thesis Challenge"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span class=\"dropcap\">Three minutes to win it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s all the time five graduate students will have to explain their research to a panel of judges Thursday, March 30, in the final round of Brock\u2019s 2017 Three Minute Thesis Challenge.<\/p>\n<p>The annual competition will be held this year at Pond Inlet from noon to 1:30 p.m. Thursday and the Brock community is invited to attend.<\/p>\n<p>The 3MT contest challenges graduate students to tell their research story in a fraction of the time typically allotted to research presentations and in a way that conveys the nature and importance of complex research to a non-specialist audience and panel of judges. They\u2019re each given just 90 seconds and one slide to get their message across.<\/p>\n<p>Judging the finals this year are Stephen Murdock, Vice President Public Relations, Enterprise Canada, Michael Chess, Marketing Supervisor, FirstOntario Performing Arts Centre and Allie Hughes, Digital Marketing Entrepreneur, Founder Hughes &amp; Co. Inc.<\/p>\n<p>Karin Perry, Vitae Program Co-ordinator and 3MT organizer, said she is always impressed with the passion presenters bring to the table, especially given the intense nature of the competition.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEach presenter has distilled very specialized and complex concepts into concise phrases and perhaps a meaningful gesture,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey have rehearsed and tested their words and gestures with friends. They\u2019re watching their pauses, vocal tone and are aware of their own body presence. There is a lot going on.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The overall winner of Brock\u2019s contest will receive $500 and the runner-up wins $250. Brock\u2019s winner also will advance to the provincial 3MT competition hosted by the University of Waterloo on Wednesday, April 12.<\/p>\n<p>The top finishers in Ontario move on to the 2017 national competition that is sponsored by the Canadian Association for Graduate Studies and held later in the spring.<\/p>\n<p>The 3MT competition was initially developed in Australia by the University of Queensland in 2008. Since then, 3MT has spread internationally and is now a regular event held at universities across Canada.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Brock\u2019s Three Minute Thesis Challenge finalists:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Caitlyn Gallant, a Master of Psychology student in the Faculty of Social Sciences, is studying the impact of concussions and how they affect reactivity to unpredictable social situations. She was also the winner of the competition\u2019s inaugural People\u2019s Choice Award.<\/li>\n<li>Katie Faust, a Health and Physical Education master\u2019s student in the Faculty of Applied Health Sciences, is researching through personal experience the impact the loss of a teammate can have.<\/li>\n<li>Laura Kovac, a Social Justice and Equity Studies master\u2019s student in the Faculty of Social Sciences, is looking at the degeneration of female sports.<\/li>\n<li>Andr\u00e9anne H\u00e9bert-Hach\u00e9, a Master of Science in Biological Sciences student in the Faculty of Math and Science, is researching ways to improve cold tolerance of grapevines by clone and rootstock selection.<\/li>\n<li>Camille Xinmei Rousseau, a Child and Youth Studies master\u2019s student in the Faculty of Social Sciences, is studying implications for children\u2019s reading motivation and achievement through participation in dog-assisted reading programs.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div id=\"attachment_43834\" style=\"width: 1060px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/3MT-challenge.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-43834\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-43834\" src=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/3MT-challenge-1050x814.jpg\" alt=\"3MT Challenge finalists\" width=\"1050\" height=\"814\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-43834\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Graduate students, clockwise from back left, Camille Xinmei Rousseau, Laura Kovac, Katie Faust, Caitlyn Gallant and Andr\u00e9anne H\u00e9bert-Hach\u00e9 are finalists in Brock\u2019s Three Minute Thesis (3MT) Challenge after a successful preliminary round on Feb. 16.<\/p><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Three minutes to win it.
