{"id":44181,"date":"2017-03-24T12:19:53","date_gmt":"2017-03-24T16:19:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=44181"},"modified":"2017-07-04T16:02:35","modified_gmt":"2017-07-04T20:02:35","slug":"brock-alumna-named-ojhl-trainer-of-the-year","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2017\/03\/brock-alumna-named-ojhl-trainer-of-the-year\/","title":{"rendered":"Brock alumna named OJHL Trainer of the Year"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sarah Ditmars (BKin \u201911, MA \u201913) is on a breakaway and shows no signs of slowing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Brock University alumna has been making strides in the hockey world as a therapist and trainer for the Trenton Golden Hawks.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Her efforts in the male-dominated industry over the past four years have not gone unnoticed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ditmars was recently named the Ontario Junior Hockey League Trainer of the Year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She is the first female to hold the honour.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During her time at Brock, Ditmars worked as a student trainer in the University\u2019s Athletic Therapy Clinic providing sports medicine care to varsity and recreational student athletes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She was one of only 20 students accepted into the clinic program with Joe Kenny, Head Athletic Therapist at Brock.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cSarah really embraced the diverse experiential learning opportunities that Brock University and the Department of Kinesiology offers at the undergraduate level,\u201d Kenny said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cShe was a high-energy, goal-oriented student who was always dedicated to serving athletes at Brock.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ditmars said her time with the school clinic played a large role in shaping the career she has today.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It helped her to build a strong work ethic and gain the experience needed to net a job soon after graduation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ditmars had been home in Trenton, Ont., for less than two weeks when she scored a position at a local therapy clinic.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She has since branched out on her own, offering rehabilitation and individual fitness coaching for athletes through Sarah Ditmars Sports Performance in addition to her work with the Trenton Golden Hawks.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She is now in her fourth season with the hockey team.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ditmars admits there was some initial hesitation at the thought of working for a boys\u2019 hockey team, but she\u2019s happy with her decision to take the job.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI was young when I started and there was a lot of pressure on the team\u2019s managers to hire a female trainer,\u201d she said. \u201cI knew I needed to go into it and just get the job done.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Sarah Ditmars (BKin \u201911, MA \u201913) is on a breakaway and shows no signs of slowing.
