{"id":44165,"date":"2017-03-23T12:02:14","date_gmt":"2017-03-23T16:02:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=44165"},"modified":"2017-03-23T13:03:50","modified_gmt":"2017-03-23T17:03:50","slug":"info-session-to-focus-on-student-loan-repayment","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2017\/03\/info-session-to-focus-on-student-loan-repayment\/","title":{"rendered":"Info session to focus on student loan repayment"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Brock University is taking a proactive approach to ensure students are prepared when it comes time to repay their school loans.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A representative from the National Student Loan Service Centre (NSLSC), through which all Canadian student loans are repaid, will be on campus Monday, March 27 to answer questions about the repayment process.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The informal information session will take place at a booth set up in Market Hall from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. There will be one-on-one availability to discuss individual situations.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt\u2019s directed toward graduating students, but the representative can answer questions regarding all student loans,\u201d said Patti Latham-Malton, Brock\u2019s Manager of Student Financial Services and Accounts Receivable.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">More than half of Brock\u2019s students use OSAP at some point during their academic career.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThis affects a very large number of students on campus,\u201d Latham-Malton said.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe majority of students are going to have a loan that needs to be repaid when they graduate Brock. I think it\u2019s really important that they understand what the obligation is.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Latham-Malton plans to invite NSLSC representatives to campus several times each year in order to reach as many students as possible.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cPart of my mandate is to try and make Brock students more financially literate, so things don\u2019t sneak up on them,\u201d she said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe information about repayment is there, but students have to look for it. You need to want to know about the process. I would like to make it easier for them to know.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She encouraged students, regardless of the year they\u2019re in, to become informed about their loan requirements and to become budget conscious.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIf we can get people at the beginning understanding what their financial picture looks like, they won\u2019t find themselves in a situation where they have to potentially leave school because they\u2019ve run out of money in year three,\u201d Latham-Malton said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI want them to understand what they have to do by the end of year one in order to make it to year four.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For many students, education is the first and largest investment they make in themselves, she said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI want them to treat it like an investment.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For anyone unable to attend Monday\u2019s session, online tutorials are available through the NSLSC.
