{"id":44022,"date":"2017-03-10T15:05:57","date_gmt":"2017-03-10T20:05:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=44022"},"modified":"2017-03-10T15:26:05","modified_gmt":"2017-03-10T20:26:05","slug":"african-caribbean-traditions-in-spotlight-at-culturewave","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2017\/03\/african-caribbean-traditions-in-spotlight-at-culturewave\/","title":{"rendered":"African Caribbean traditions in spotlight at CultureWave"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Students from the Brock Roots African Caribbean Society will highlight cultural tradition this weekend through performing arts.<\/p>\n<p>CultureWave will take over Sir Winston Churchill Secondary School in St. Catharines on Saturday, March 11, showcasing student talent and national pride through singing, dancing and modelling.<\/p>\n<p>The night will feature a Caribbean adaptation of William Shakespeare\u2019s Romeo and Juliet.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvents like this are meant to showcase who we are,\u201d said Summer Sayles, the club&#8217;s vice-president and a third-year Sociology student.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs a person of Caribbean descent, I don\u2019t believe there\u2019s enough representation of our culture and I think it\u2019s up to us to really put ourselves in the spotlight,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Brock Roots ACS is one of the longest standing student clubs on campus, having been ratified by the students\u2019 union more than a decade ago.<\/p>\n<p>Every year, Roots ACS celebrates the diversity of its club members as well as other African Caribbean people across Niagara and the Greater Toronto Area.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have a strong relationship with similar clubs at different universities in Ontario,\u201d Sayles said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe attend each others events so that we can continue to expand the awareness of our culture.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This is the club\u2019s second biggest event of the year, falling only behind\u00a0an annual pageant in the fall that allows Brock students to represent their country through a fashion and talent show.<\/p>\n<p>Culture Wave, a semi-formal event, takes place from 6 to 10 p.m.<\/p>\n<p>Tickets can be purchased at the door for $30.
