{"id":43977,"date":"2017-03-08T15:18:49","date_gmt":"2017-03-08T20:18:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=43977"},"modified":"2017-03-09T16:41:18","modified_gmt":"2017-03-09T21:41:18","slug":"black-girl-magic-conference-aims-to-empower-women","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2017\/03\/black-girl-magic-conference-aims-to-empower-women\/","title":{"rendered":"Black Girl Magic Conference aims to empower women"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Amanda Lyn is working to amplify the voices of women of colour.<\/p>\n<p>After finding inspiration last fall from speakers at\u00a0White Privilege Symposium Canada and the Niagara Leadership Summit for Women,\u00a0the second-year Kinesiology student decided\u00a0to create an outlet for women to share their stories and have their thoughts\u00a0heard.<\/p>\n<p>That vision has come to fruition in the inaugural Black Girl Magic Conference, set for March 18.<\/p>\n<p>The event, sponsored by the Student Justice Centre, Student Life and Community Experience, and Brock University Students&#8217; Union Advocacy,\u00a0aims to\u00a0bring together students, scholars, youths, leaders and community members to\u00a0empower women of colour and\u00a0create a culture of understanding.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere just aren\u2019t enough voices out there that represent women of colour,\u201d Lyn said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs leaders, we can change the way people see us and break down the stereotypes that have been around for far too long.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The daylong conference will encourage attendees to use their voices as a catalyst for change.<\/p>\n<p>Seminars, workshops, performances and a keynote presentation from Akio Maroon, a recognized human rights advocate, are planned for the event.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe know it\u2019s going to take more than just talking about it,\u201d Lyn said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe need to support each other as we act on the change that we talk about. Things like the natural hair movement and the diversity of black dolls for kids are just a couple of indicators that we\u2019re on our way to achieving the kind of authentic representation we need.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The conference takes place\u00a0in Thistle Hallway from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.<\/p>\n<p>Attendance is free and lunch will be provided. Childcare will also be available.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis conference is for everyone, just be open and willing,\u201d Lyn said, while encouraging people to attend.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHear our stories, see where we\u2019re coming from and understand who we are so we can face these challenges together.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Registration closes March 15.
