{"id":43717,"date":"2017-02-23T16:01:37","date_gmt":"2017-02-23T20:01:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=43717"},"modified":"2017-05-11T15:15:34","modified_gmt":"2017-05-11T19:15:34","slug":"goodman-students-win-first-place-in-entrepreneurship-competition","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2017\/02\/goodman-students-win-first-place-in-entrepreneurship-competition\/","title":{"rendered":"Goodman students win first place in entrepreneurship competition"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Celine Nguyen, Sylvie Nguyen and Shubhra Rishi, all business students in Brock\u2019s Goodman School of Business, were given a taste of entrepreneurship \u2014 and they liked it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The sampling was offered to the trio, who are taking Professor Shawna Chen\u2019s entrepreneurship class this semester, at the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.up.co\/communities\/canada\/york\/startup-weekend\/10335\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Startup Weekend York Region<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Jan. 27 to 29.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The students chose to attend the competition as part of an assignment and ended up winning first place for their business idea and pitch.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The two-day event had participants spend 54 hours listening to entrepreneurial pitches, learning from business mentors and forming teams to build an idea.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rishi said the Goodman group didn\u2019t attend the event with a specific business idea in mind. Instead, they wanted to join a team and learn more about entrepreneurship by helping them with their business knowledge.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe went really wanting to help someone else who was passionate about their idea with their business,\u201d said Rishi.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They made a connection with Jelani Thompson and Kwaku Attah, both Seneca College students and web developers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The five students hit it off and worked all day Jan. 28 to build on their collective idea for a new food app that originated from their collaborative discussions and joint passion for food.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI think that\u2019s why we were so successful,\u201d Celine said. \u201cWe\u2019re all just so passionate about this idea.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The app, called Feed Me, is designed to pair consumers with food dishes that are sorted and customized by dietary restrictions, distance and price range.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With the tagline \u201call you can swipe,\u201d the app shows consumers photos of food and matches them with the restaurant\u2019s information only when the photo is swiped right.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cYou\u2019re presented with different types of dishes and we wanted to focus on local restaurants that are hard to find,\u201d said Sylvie.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The group worked quickly to create a working prototype for the judges, drawing on Celine&#8217;s graphic design skills \u2014 a hobby that she had never explored professionally before.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe main reason we won was because we used the weekend as a tool for networking and we were able to create the prototype so quickly,\u201d she said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now that they have Feed Me on their plates, they are looking at pursuing it in a bigger way.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe\u2019ve had people reach out to us after the weekend who are interested in working with us on this business,\u201d said Rishi.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Startup Weekend experience was eye-opening for the three Goodman students, who had not previously thought about entrepreneurship as a career path.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI was very closed-minded about entrepreneurship before,\u201d said Sylvie. \u201cThis weekend was life-changing.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Feed Me has since become a resident of BioLinc, Brock\u2019s business incubator run by the Goodman School of Business.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_43720\" style=\"width: 1010px\" class=\"wp-caption
