{"id":43671,"date":"2017-02-21T09:51:24","date_gmt":"2017-02-21T13:51:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=43671"},"modified":"2017-02-22T15:14:48","modified_gmt":"2017-02-22T19:14:48","slug":"nserc-video-contest-a-changing-arctic","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2017\/02\/nserc-video-contest-a-changing-arctic\/","title":{"rendered":"NSERC VIDEO CONTEST: A Changing Arctic"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Dan Hughes wants you to know that climate change is real, it\u2019s serious and it impacts people.<\/p>\n<p>In an area of Canada\u2019s North called Old Crow Flats, the impacts are startling with lakes draining and massive erosion along riverbanks and lakeshores.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI want to let everyone else know what\u2019s going on because most of the population doesn\u2019t see these large changes in the middle of the Arctic unless it\u2019s headline news,\u201d the Masters student said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey don\u2019t see these large changes that also influence First Nations communities, which is what we should be talking about.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hughes is studying how changes in water chemistry and flow are transforming the landscape of Old Crow Flats, a lake-rich permafrost area of the Yukon.<\/p>\n<p>The Vuntut Gwitchin First Nation people are seeing their fishing, hunting and living environments rapidly altered, he said.<\/p>\n<p>Hughes explains his work in A Changing Arctic, a 60-second video, he created and submitted to the NSERC (Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada)<em> Science, Action!<\/em> Competition.<br \/>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/bwBauVgOM5U\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Hughes\u2019 entry, along with three others submitted by Brock students, made it into the Top 40 in the national student research contest and is in the race to make the finals.<\/p>\n<p>The 25 videos with the most views on YouTube between Feb. 1 and Feb. 28 will proceed to the final round, where a panel of judges will select the winners.<\/p>\n<p>The focus of Hughes\u2019 research \u2014 inspired by the work of his supervisor Kevin Turner, assistant professor in the Department of Geography and Tourism Studies \u2014 remains on Northern Canada because of the area\u2019s ability to act as a \u2018canary in a coal mine\u2019 for climate change.<\/p>\n<p>Increasing temperatures and fluctuating precipitation levels in the north are more pronounced than in other parts of the country.<\/p>\n<p>Rising temperatures result in permafrost thawing at a greater and faster rate. When this occurs, carbon that\u2019s trapped in the permafrost is released into the water and surrounding environment, changing the water\u2019s chemistry and potentially entering oceans or the atmosphere, perpetuating climate change.<\/p>\n<p>Thawing permafrost can also cause erosion on the banks of waterways.<\/p>\n<p>The shorelines of Old Crow Flats\u2019 rivers are eroding because warmer temperatures have weakened the permafrost, causing the bank material to tumble into the waters.<\/p>\n<p>Hughes said because Old Crow Flats is so isolated, landscape impacts are mainly from global climate changes rather than direct human impact.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere I live near Brock, you see the landscape impacts that are more influenced by human activity: urbanization, dumps, pollution and others,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhereas in the Arctic where I\u2019m working, you\u2019re seeing the natural influence of climate changes: the big landscape changes, the sediment slumps along rivers and lakes, and lakes that drain in a few days.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The 15 NSERC competition finalists will be announced no later than April 5.<\/p>\n<p><em>Editor\u2019s Note: This is the third\u00a0in a series of four stories profiling the four Brock University students in the running to win the NSERC (Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada) Science, Action! competition.
