{"id":43612,"date":"2017-02-16T16:20:03","date_gmt":"2017-02-16T20:20:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=43612"},"modified":"2017-02-16T23:22:55","modified_gmt":"2017-02-17T03:22:55","slug":"high-school-tech-skills-tested-at-inaugural-maker-challenge","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2017\/02\/high-school-tech-skills-tested-at-inaugural-maker-challenge\/","title":{"rendered":"High school tech skills tested at inaugural Maker Challenge"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They came ready to make their mark, just as their name would suggest.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And Team Impact, of Lakeshore Catholic High School, did just that, walking away with the top prize in the Faculty of Education\u2019s inaugural Maker Challenge.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Brock competition saw high school teams from Niagara and Hamilton come up with innovative creations meant to aid others and solve common problems.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The projects were presented and judged during the Faculty\u2019s annual Teaching with Technology Showcase.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Team Impact created a\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=8oFnkGJOyy0&amp;feature=youtu.be\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fully accessible cafeteria table<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to win the competition at Brock\u2019s Hamilton campus.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With the day\u2019s big win came a $2,000 prize that will support the Port Colborne school\u2019s technology program.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The students were focused on creating something that would help people in need, said Lakeshore teacher Tino Nuccitelli.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When it was realized the school was without accessible tables in its cafeteria, the team jumped into action.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The students created a table with a void in the attached bench that would allow someone in a wheelchair to sit with their peers to enjoy a meal.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nuccitelli said the experience allowed his students to hone their creative skills, but it also opened their eyes to the challenges people with disabilities may face.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It caused them to grow emotionally, he added.<\/span><br \/>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/8oFnkGJOyy0\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Holy Cross Catholic Secondary School in St. Catharines placed second in the competition with an <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/webfm_send\/43389\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">innovative approach to community beautification<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and Stratford Northwestern Secondary School, in Stratford, took home third place for their<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/sites.google.com\/ed.amdsb.ca\/snssbrockmakerchallenge\/home\" target=\"_blank\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">accessible tech education table<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dan Lynch, manager of Brock University\u2019s BioLinc, helped to judge the competition and was impressed by what the students brought to the table. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The challenge stressed teamwork, co-operation and resourcefulness, and provided technological education teachers and students the opportunity to demonstrate their creative abilities and community spirit by working on a public service technology class project.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe Maker Challenge was a success. It showed off the students\u2019 creativity and entrepreneurship as they created and built some very resourceful pieces,\u201d said Challenge organizer Tony DiPetta.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe hope that this is the beginning of a longstanding tradition in our Faculty and we look forward to what students and teams submit in years to come.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>A full list of Maker Challenge submissions is available at\u00a0<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/ Brocku.ca\/makerchallenge\">Brocku.ca\/makerchallenge<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The competition was a highlight of Thursday\u2019s Teaching with Technology Showcase, which drew about 150 teacher candidates. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The event was designed to inform future teachers about the latest technology and increase comfort with tools available for today\u2019s technology-driven classrooms.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">More than 20 workshops were held covering a variety of topics such as social media in the classroom and using SMART technology to promote collaboration.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The event offered a \u201cwide range of topics for all teacher candidates regardless of their subject areas or divisions,\u201d said teacher candidate Alyssa Berardocco.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe could all take something away from today and put it to use in our future classrooms.
