{"id":43344,"date":"2017-02-02T16:02:22","date_gmt":"2017-02-02T20:02:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=43344"},"modified":"2017-02-07T17:41:44","modified_gmt":"2017-02-07T21:41:44","slug":"brock-offers-help-to-foreign-students-stranded-by-u-s-ban","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2017\/02\/brock-offers-help-to-foreign-students-stranded-by-u-s-ban\/","title":{"rendered":"Brock offers help to international students stranded by U.S. ban"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/\">Brock University<\/a> has announced immediate steps to streamline its admissions process and waive certain fees for students from countries impacted\u00a0by U.S. travel restrictions.<\/p>\n<p>University officials have spent several days consulting faculty and students affected by the new measures, and monitoring the plight of international students whose education plans have been thrown into uncertainty by the political situation in the United States.<\/p>\n<p>Last week, President Donald Trump triggered anxiety and protests in his own country and globally when he imposed U.S. travel restrictions on citizens from Iran, Iraq, Libya, Syria, Sudan, Somalia and Yemen.<\/p>\n<p>In a communiqu\u00e9 sent to Canadian embassies and high commissions, as well as partner institutions and international colleagues around the world, Brock listed steps it is taking to help eligible undergraduate and ESL students register for classes starting in May or September this year. For students affected by the travel ban, Brock has pledged to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>accelerate admissions for academically qualified students holding passports from the listed countries;<\/li>\n<li>waive application fees for admissions and residence;<\/li>\n<li>cut tuition deposits by 50 per cent;<\/li>\n<li>provide a $1000 \u201ctransition award\u201d to help students get to Brock\u2019s main campus in Niagara;<\/li>\n<li>assess current university studies for use as transfer credits; and<\/li>\n<li>guarantee residence spaces for the upcoming spring, summer and fall terms.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Financial aid and guaranteed residence space is also being extended to <a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/graduate-studies\" target=\"_blank\">graduate students<\/a> from the affected countries.<\/p>\n<p>Applicants might also be eligible for additional funding through Brock\u2019s existing scholarships and awards for international students from all countries.<\/p>\n<p>University Provost Tom Dunk said senior administration and staff have been working most of the week on ways to help potential students who have been impacted by the Trump order.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBrock welcomes individuals from around the world,\u201d said Dunk. \u201cFostering an inclusive, safe and accessible environment is at the heart of this university\u2019s core values.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jamie Mandigo, Brock\u2019s Vice-Provost for Enrolment Management and International, calls the move \u201ca gesture to help support those caught in the middle of all this mess.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have been urged by members of our own community to be part of a solution, to step up and help people who are trapped in a political quandary that is not of their making,\u201d said Mandigo.<\/p>\n<p>To request more information on the Brock plan, email <a href=\"mailto:international@brocku.ca\">international@brocku.ca<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Brock University has announced immediate steps to streamline its admissions process and waive certain fees for students from countries impacted\u00a0by [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":8,"featured_media":43348,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":[],"categories":[3319,4052,1],"tags":[],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/43344"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/8"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=43344"}],"version-history":[{"count":8,"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/43344\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":43450,"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/43344\/revisions\/43450"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/43348"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=43344"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=43344"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=43344"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
