Gibson Library is making resources more accessible for students.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The system, Ares, has streamlined workflows for Brock instructors and Library staff, improved discoverability for students and helped to ensure that course readings are copyright and AODA (Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act) compliant.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With the integration of Ares into Sakai, the University\u2019s Learning Management System, students are able to easily access readings in digital format, identify and locate reserve materials in hardcopy, and sign up for an RSS feed of newly added resources. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The software allows instructors to add items in a variety of formats including books, scanned book chapters, articles, streaming video and web links.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cLibrary staff will review course readings, ensure copyright compliance and provide persistent links to digital materials so they are accessible via Sakai on- and off-campus,\u201d said Elaine Jaeger, Library Reserve Supervisor.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Library also provides complimentary scanning and uploading of materials.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">History Professor Andrew MacDonald has been using the new reserves system for his classes and said it seems \u201cpopular and successful\u201d with his students who have been using it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt\u2019s not simply a matter of convenience,\u201d he said. \u201cIn larger classes it alleviates the pressure on hard copies at the reserve desk and facilitates access for more students to potentially limited resources.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Instructors are encouraged to send their syllabi to <\/span><a href=\"mailto:reserve@brocku.ca\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reserve@brocku.ca<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for processing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jaeger can also be contacted at <\/span><a href=\"mailto:ejaeger@brocku.ca\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ejaeger@brocku.ca<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or ext. 3963 for more information on how switching to Ares can benefit students.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A new course reserves system at the James A.
