{"id":43195,"date":"2017-01-26T17:07:21","date_gmt":"2017-01-26T21:07:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=43195"},"modified":"2021-04-16T16:49:45","modified_gmt":"2021-04-16T20:49:45","slug":"brock-supports-team-niagara-in-bid-for-canada-summer-games","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2017\/01\/brock-supports-team-niagara-in-bid-for-canada-summer-games\/","title":{"rendered":"Brock supports Team Niagara in bid for Canada Summer Games"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Brock University is partnering with a number of area groups and agencies to bring the 2021 Canada Summer Games to Niagara region.<\/p>\n<p>The Games are rotated across the country every four years and 2021 is Ontario\u2019s turn to provide the venue. Niagara will be up against bids from Ottawa, Kitchener-Waterloo and Sudbury to win the selection, in a decision expected this spring.<\/p>\n<p>The Games typically see more than 4,800 athletes, supporters and parents descend on the host community over nearly three weeks, generating an economic impact estimated at $200 million.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this week, the executive committee of Brock\u2019s Board of Trustees approved a non-binding memorandum of understanding that would see the University become an athletes\u2019 village during the Games, with 2,400 athletes staying for a week at a time and making use of residences, dining halls and ancillary services.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0Niagara bid\u00a0calls for\u00a0competition or practice\u00a0events to take place in all 12 of the region\u2019s municipalities. Besides housing the athletes, Brock would host up to seven events on campus. Brock could\u00a0also\u00a0end up being the site of new or upgraded facilities that would benefit future undergraduate and graduate students, academic programming, experiential education and enhanced research and partnership opportunities,\u00a0as well as the\u00a0broader Niagara community.<\/p>\n<p>The Niagara bid team is being headed up by Doug Hamilton, a retired lawyer who lives in St. Catharines.
