{"id":43029,"date":"2017-01-18T14:39:34","date_gmt":"2017-01-18T18:39:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=43029"},"modified":"2017-01-18T15:37:26","modified_gmt":"2017-01-18T19:37:26","slug":"photo-exhibit-launched-by-brock-alumna","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2017\/01\/photo-exhibit-launched-by-brock-alumna\/","title":{"rendered":"Photo exhibit launched by Brock alumna"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Three classes into her first Brock University art course with Professor Keri Cronin, Lauren Regier (BA &#8217;14) knew she wanted to study art full time.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She has since continued to nurture her passion for art and recently launched a photography exhibit at Malcolm Gear Studio in Welland.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Regier called\u00a0her connection with Brock and the local arts community, as well as an artist residency she took following graduation, critical to her artistic development.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It was her professors at the University\u00a0who explained the residency process and shared their professional experiences to help guide her in an appropriate direction.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With the support of professors Amy Friend, Irene Loughlin and Donna Szoke, Regier opted to participate in the Sointula Art Shed Residency Program near Vancouver Island in March 2016.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The residency was an important opportunity for her to explore functional and survival properties of plants, humans and animals, and to apply that research into the construction of the plants in her Bioart series.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The series is a collaboration of science and art that creates new, interesting organisms by meshing together existing bits of plant matter.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Regier\u2019s work combines plants with industrial products to create strange new prototypes. She documents her creations in black and white photography, hand-tinted with watercolours.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_43030\" style=\"width: 507px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-43030\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-43030\" src=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/REGIER-ART.jpg\" alt=\"Lauren Regier Bioart\" width=\"497\" height=\"648\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-43030\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Lauren Regier\u2019s Bioart piece Aroma Illius Laqueo.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Regier\u2019s current exhibition, Fantasy Fleur, is an offshoot of her Bioart series.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI wanted to break with the notion of idealized beauty \u2014 something that is manufactured and very commonplace when it comes to depicting nature, such as floral wallpaper and furniture patterns,\u201d Regier said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Fantasy Fleur photographs feature plants in different stages of their life cycles. They are printed on aluminum; the highly polished surfaces allow for interactive play between the viewer and the work.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cSimilar to species that bloom at specific times of the day, these metallic prints respond to their environments and viewers are forced to physically interact with the work in order to see the image,\u201d Regier said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Producing the pieces has been a highlight for Regier over the past year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u201cMeeting wonderful people in the community through Brock University and Rodman Hall has been crucial in developing my practice and providing me a platform to show my photographs,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Regier first met Malcolm Gear in her curatorial art class at Brock.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The artists recently reconnected at a Rodman Hall event at Mahtay Caf\u00e9, which ultimately led to Regier\u2019s exhibition being launched at Malcolm Gear Studio, 464 East Main St. in Welland.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Her work is on display until Jan. 31. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Regier\u2019s photography is also <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.laurenregier.wixsite.com\/studiovisit\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">available for viewing on her website<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Three classes into her first art course with Professor Keri Cronin, Lauren Regier (BA &#8217;14) knew she wanted to study art full time.
