{"id":42950,"date":"2017-01-13T16:30:34","date_gmt":"2017-01-13T20:30:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=42950"},"modified":"2017-01-13T16:31:09","modified_gmt":"2017-01-13T20:31:09","slug":"brock-political-scientists-to-host-panel-discussion-on-trump-presidency","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2017\/01\/brock-political-scientists-to-host-panel-discussion-on-trump-presidency\/","title":{"rendered":"Brock political scientists to host panel discussion on Trump presidency"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>With President-elect Donald Trump\u2019s inauguration fast approaching, Brock University political scientists will be coming together to discuss what a Trump presidency will look like and how it might impact Canadians.<\/p>\n<p>The Department of Political Science is hosting a public panel discussion at <strong>St. Catharines Public Library Tuesday, Jan. 17 at 7 p.m. <\/strong>to discuss the chaos that has followed the election in November and explore what to look out for as Trump transitions into office.<\/p>\n<p><em>The Rise of Trumpism: What\u2019s Next for the United States, Canada and the World? <\/em>will examine the past, present and future political landscape and cover themes on nationalism, fascism and misogyny.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was not surprised by the election results, and from a long career of studying politics, I think there are good reasons why democracies in their declining stages turn to this kind of ruler,\u201d says Brock University political scientist and professor Leah Bradshaw. \u201cTrump is a demagogue, that is to say, a creature of democracy who appeals to the worst elements of democratic popular will. Trump is not an isolated phenomenon. Western liberal democracy is in trouble.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI plan to discuss what Trump\u2019s election means for the Canada-US relationship,\u201d says Associate Professor Blayne Haggart. \u201cIn the worst-case scenario, Trump\u2019s presidency could present Canada with an existential crisis by upending the international rules and norms upon which Canada has based all of its economic and international policies for seven decades.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The event is open to the public but tickets are required and are available through <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eventbrite.ca\/e\/the-rise-of-trumpism-whats-next-for-the-us-canada-and-the-world-tickets-31042008483\" target=\"_blank\">Eventbrite.ca<\/a>.
