{"id":42032,"date":"2016-11-15T12:27:32","date_gmt":"2016-11-15T16:27:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=42032"},"modified":"2016-12-01T15:56:33","modified_gmt":"2016-12-01T19:56:33","slug":"moving-out-for-tower-construction-new-bike-racks-will-have-cctv-surveillance","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2016\/11\/moving-out-for-tower-construction-new-bike-racks-will-have-cctv-surveillance\/","title":{"rendered":"Moving out for Tower construction, new bike racks will have CCTV surveillance"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"p1\">After this week cyclists will no longer be able to park their bikes in front of the Schmon Tower, however new spaces will be available nearby.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">With the Tower&#8217;s main plaza about\u00a0to become a construction site for the Brock LINC project, the Tower bike racks are being relocated to the north side of Plaza building, where security\u00a0cameras will monitor the bike racks as well as the pedestrian walkway between the the Cairns and Mackenzie Chown complexes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Any bicycles on Schmon Tower racks as of this Friday Nov. 18 <\/span><span class=\"s1\">will be removed and stored at the Campus Security office. Facilities Management will be putting up signage indicating the next closest bike rack.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The new rack locations also represent an effort by Campus Security and Facilities Management to reduce bike thefts on campus, specifically the south side of the Schmon Tower.\u00a0Cyclists are reminded that, while no lock is 100-per-cent theft-proof, people can still keep some things in mind to help avoid the theft of their bike:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">make sure your bike more secure than the one next to yours. \u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">don&#8217;t rely on cable locks, but use multiple locks.<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">the smaller the U-shape lock, the better.<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">install quick release levers on your front wheel and seat, and lock up or take your front wheel and seat with you.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Cyclists with questions or concerns can email <a href=\"mailto:kthorp@brocku.ca\"><span class=\"s3\">kthorp@brocku.ca<\/span><\/a> or <a href=\"mailto:security@brocku.ca\"><span class=\"s3\">security@brocku.ca<\/span><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">UPDATE:<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">On Dec. 1,\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">2016, seven abandoned bicycles were removed from the bicycle racks at the Schmon tower by Facilities Management and Campus Security. The bike racks have been relocated to the north side of the Plaza East entrance while the bicycles have been secured by Campus Security. The owners of these bicycles are asked to contact Inspector Karl Thorp at x4310 in order to identify and claim their bicycle.
