{"id":41796,"date":"2016-10-31T15:53:12","date_gmt":"2016-10-31T19:53:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=41796"},"modified":"2016-11-01T13:38:18","modified_gmt":"2016-11-01T17:38:18","slug":"brock-scores-highly-in-publishing-category-in-national-research-survey","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2016\/10\/brock-scores-highly-in-publishing-category-in-national-research-survey\/","title":{"rendered":"Brock scores highly in publishing category in national research survey"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>New Canadian R&amp;D data gives Brock University a top-2 national ranking in its category when it comes to the number and growth of research publications over the past 15 years.<\/p>\n<p>According to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.researchinfosource.com\/top50_univ.php\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Canada\u2019s Top 50 Research Universities 2016<\/em><\/a> report, published annually by Research Infosource, Brock faculty produced 3,930 publications from 2000 to 2014, which is second-highest among of 14 universities listed in the report\u2019s University Research Publications Growth 2000-2014 table.<\/p>\n<p>(Note: Although Brock has had graduate programming for more than a decade and offers nearly\u00a050 master&#8217;s and doctoral degrees, the ranking agency places Brock and other comprehensive universities in its &#8220;undergraduate&#8221; category, which Research Infosource describes as &#8220;universities with mainly undergraduate programs&#8221;.)<\/p>\n<p>The average number of publications that the 14 universities produced over that 15-year period was 2,622, with a high of 5,219 and a low of 1,315.<\/p>\n<p>Similarly, Brock scored second place in the growth rate of publications. Brock increased its rate of publishing 243.8 per cent from 2000 to 2014.<\/p>\n<p>On average, the 14 universities listed increased their publishing at a rate of 170.5 per cent over the same period of time.<\/p>\n<p>Ron Freedman, CEO of Research Infosource Inc., says Brock has come a long way from its undergraduate focus at the beginning of the millennium.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOver a 15-year period, which is not a long time in academic terms, the University has grown substantially, both in the terms of the money that it is attracting for research, but most importantly on the output side: what it\u2019s doing with the money in terms of academic publications.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cParticularly in an era where resources have been flat for the last few years, Brock has done a good job at turning available resources and money into academic outputs,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p>Freedman notes that publications are one \u201cstandard method\u201d of measuring an institution\u2019s research focus.<\/p>\n<p>The report defines publications as including articles, notes and reviews published by researchers affiliated with Canadian universities or research hospitals in peer-reviewed scientific international journals, covering different fields of natural science, health science and social science and humanities.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m really pleased at our publication record; it demonstrates the outstanding work that our researchers and scholars at Brock are doing all across the board, in all areas of the University,\u201d says Joffre Mercier, Brock\u2019s vice-president research.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re giving Canada a lot of \u2018bang for the buck,\u2019\u201d he says. \u201cWe\u2019ve done a good job securing funding and we\u2019re continuing to work in that area \u2013 we\u2019re in for a very good year this year.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Research Infosource Inc., known as \u201cCanada\u2019s source of R&amp;D intelligence,\u201d tracks post-secondary institutions\u2019 research performance in a wide variety of areas.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p> Brock University is nationally ranked second in its category for the number and growth of research publications over a 15-year period, says new Canadian R&#038;D data. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":20,"featured_media":38871,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":[],"categories":[1,5],"tags":[],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/41796"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/20"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=41796"}],"version-history":[{"count":3,"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/41796\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":41801,"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/41796\/revisions\/41801"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/38871"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=41796"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=41796"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=41796"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
