{"id":41645,"date":"2016-10-20T16:35:09","date_gmt":"2016-10-20T20:35:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=41645"},"modified":"2016-10-21T09:42:13","modified_gmt":"2016-10-21T13:42:13","slug":"student-speaking-at-niagara-leadership-summit-for-women","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2016\/10\/student-speaking-at-niagara-leadership-summit-for-women\/","title":{"rendered":"Student speaking at Niagara Leadership Summit for Women"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Madi Fuller is redefining the bro-code.<\/p>\n<p>The fourth-year Political Science student will leave no stereotype untouched when she presents her workshop on \u2018The new MEN-tality\u2019 at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.niagaralsw.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\">Niagara Leadership Summit for Women<\/a> at Brock University on Saturday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrom a young age, men are put in this masculinity box that tells them they need to be confident, aggressive and unemotional. Outside this box, we have women who think they have to be humble, passive and compassionate because being all of these other things aren\u2019t for them, they\u2019re only for men. That\u2019s what I want to change,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Hosted by the YWCA Niagara Region, this sold-out summit brings hundreds of experts, leaders and participants to Brock University each year to discuss the prominent issues surrounding women in leadership, as well as empowering women to be strong leaders.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOn the surface, the summit is about women, but we also need to have these conversations about the role men play,\u201d Fuller said.<\/p>\n<p>Her workshop builds off the foundations of feminism \u2013 advocating for equal rights for both men and women and highlighting the idea that helping women also means helping men.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe need to re-train what we think we know about how men and women should act. Men should be allowed to cry and women should be allowed to be confident without being called something derogatory. We need to challenge what we see as just \u2018being a girl or boy,\u2019\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf women are thinking about growing their leadership style, I definitely recommend surrounding yourself with women leaders. Speak up for what you believe in because you will empower both women and men in great ways.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Shirley Cheechoo, Brock University\u2019s Chancellor and a prominent female leader, will also be at the summit as one of the keynote speakers.
