{"id":41603,"date":"2016-10-19T14:30:42","date_gmt":"2016-10-19T18:30:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=41603"},"modified":"2017-08-04T09:00:05","modified_gmt":"2017-08-04T13:00:05","slug":"centre-of-medieval-and-renaissance-studies-holding-free-symposium-friday","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2016\/10\/centre-of-medieval-and-renaissance-studies-holding-free-symposium-friday\/","title":{"rendered":"Centre of Medieval and Renaissance Studies holding free symposium Friday"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This year has been a significant one for Middle Ages and Renaissance anniversaries.<\/p>\n<p>It has been\u00a01,000 years since the Danish conquest of England in 1066, 800 years since the death of King John (of Magna Carta fame) in 1216, and 400 years since the deaths of both William Shakespeare and Miguel de Cervantes in 1616.<\/p>\n<p>To commemorate these events, the Centre of Medieval and Renaissance Studies is presenting a free symposium Friday, Oct. 21.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSweet \u201916: A Celebration of Centenaries from the Middle Ages and Renaissance 1016-2016\u201d will be held from 10 a.m. to noon at Brock University\u2019s Special Collections and Archives on the 10<sup>th<\/sup> floor of the James A. Gibson Library.<\/p>\n<p>The symposium includes talks by Brock professors Angus Somerville (English, retired), Andrew McDonald (History), Matthew Martin (English), and Filipe Ruan (Modern Languages, Literatures and Cultures). There will also be a series of dramatic readings from Medieval and Renaissance sources.
