{"id":41387,"date":"2016-10-04T13:25:01","date_gmt":"2016-10-04T17:25:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=41387"},"modified":"2018-07-17T13:55:59","modified_gmt":"2018-07-17T17:55:59","slug":"hundreds-attend-white-privilege-symposium-at-brock","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2016\/10\/hundreds-attend-white-privilege-symposium-at-brock\/","title":{"rendered":"Hundreds attend White Privilege Symposium at Brock"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Organizers of the <a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/racial-climate\/wpsc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">White Privilege Symposium at Brock University<\/a> over the weekend had a simple goal: to bring the issues of racism and privilege to the forefront.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe did accomplish what we set out to do because we had multiple lenses through which to gain insight to how exclusion is tied to power,\u00a0white privilege, colonialism and racism,\u201d said co-organizer Dolana Mogadime. \u201cWPSC arrived at a crucial time for Brock as well and many universities across our nation, as we are having to account for how we are responding to racial issues on campus.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>More than 400 people from across the province attended the conference, including nearly 100 Brock students.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was a true success. We\u2019ve received lots of positive feedback from participants about their WPSC experience, both in terms of the quality of the keynote speakers and interactive workshops; and in the way that Brock University took a leading role in bringing people together to have these important conversations,\u201d said co-organizer Brad Clarke, Director, Student Life and Community Experience.<\/p>\n<p>He said, in addition to encouraging dialogue about challenging topics, the symposium was meant to increase the profile and reach of Brock\u2019s Racial Climate Task Force and \u201cto highlight the efforts underway to better understand the dynamics of race and racism within the Brock context.
