{"id":41219,"date":"2016-09-23T09:56:33","date_gmt":"2016-09-23T13:56:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=41219"},"modified":"2016-09-23T09:56:33","modified_gmt":"2016-09-23T13:56:33","slug":"walk-of-life-to-raise-money-for-local-cardiac-care","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2016\/09\/walk-of-life-to-raise-money-for-local-cardiac-care\/","title":{"rendered":"Walk of Life to raise money for local cardiac care"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span class=\"page-intro dropcap\">Thousands of people in Niagara experience serious cardiac problems every year.\u00a0Thousands more are at risk for developing heart disease.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The Brock-Niagara Centre for Health and Well-Being offers supports and services to people living with cardiovascular issues.<\/p>\n<p>The centre, in\u00a0partnership with the Cardiac Health Foundation of Canada, is hosting the annual Walk of Life fundraiser to raise money and awareness for heart disease\u00a0prevention, education and cardiovascular rehabilitation.<\/p>\n<p>This year\u2019s annual Walk of Life will take place on Friday, Sept. 30 from 8 a.m. to 4\u00a0p.m.\u00a0at 130 Lockhart Dr. in St. Catharines.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEach year there are over 4,500 cardiac events that require hospitalization in Niagara, and a vastly greater number of people are at risk of developing cardiovascular disease,\u201d says Brock-Niagara Centre for Health and Well-Being Director, Deborah O\u2019Leary.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Brock-Niagara Centre for Health and Well-Being provides a much-needed service for the Niagara Region as heart disease accounts for a significant number of deaths amongst residents. We serve the people of the Niagara Region, and are able to do so through events such as the Walk of Life,\u201d says O\u2019Leary.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"pull-quote\">100\u00a0per cent\u00a0of the money raised goes back into the Centre to be able to purchase exercise equipment and improve our members\u2019 experience.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Walk of Life is a national campaign that includes participants from 30 cardiac rehabilitation centres across Canada.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are very happy to be taking part in the national Walk of Life campaign and appreciate the support we have received to be able to bring this opportunity to our community. Through this partnership, 100\u00a0per cent\u00a0of the money raised goes back into the Centre to be able to purchase exercise equipment and improve our members\u2019 experience,\u201d says O\u2019Leary.<\/p>\n<p>Brock-Niagara Centre members, and the Brock and Niagara community, are invited to register in teams of three. Each team will exercise for one hour to occupy one of several exercise stations &#8211; treadmills, bikes, rowers or ellipticals. Participants can also choose to do\u00a0a 60-minute walk outdoors.<\/p>\n<p>Students and staff can also take part\u00a0in the\u00a0annual circuit showdown to \u201ccrown\u201d the fittest team.\u00a0The goal for the Brock-Niagara Centre is to see how many stations we can occupy for eight\u00a0hours.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll of our exercise participants will be supervised by our staff and wonderful student volunteers,\u201d says O\u2019Leary.<\/p>\n<p>Rolling Registration will begin at 8\u00a0a.m.\u00a0Exercise activities will change every hour.\u00a0Complimentary snacks and refreshments will be served at noon and prizes will be given to the top three fundraisers.<\/p>\n<p>The Brock-Niagara Centre for Health and Well-Being is a non-profit organization committed to cardiac rehabilitation and prevention.<\/p>\n<p>All of the community programming offered through the Brock-Niagara Centre involves cardiovascular exercise, weight training, as well as \u2018heart health\u2019 educational seminars.
