{"id":40826,"date":"2016-09-06T14:13:20","date_gmt":"2016-09-06T18:13:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=40826"},"modified":"2016-09-06T15:13:33","modified_gmt":"2016-09-06T19:13:33","slug":"brock-residences-go-wireless","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2016\/09\/brock-residences-go-wireless\/","title":{"rendered":"Brock residences go wireless"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Ethernet cords are a thing of the past at Brock University as all student residence buildings are now equipped with wireless Internet.<\/p>\n<p>Since 2014, Brock\u2019s Information Technology Services department has been reconfiguring the residence buildings to be completely wireless, adapting to the changing landscape of connectivity.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re focused on the key areas where students gather, such as in front of the tower and in between campus buildings, keeping up with technology changes and higher demand for a faster network,\u201d said Edward Blasinski, Director, Project and Administrative Support Office.<\/p>\n<p>Each year, ITS and the Department of Residence distribute a survey to students living in residence to determine what changes need to be made for the following year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBeing constantly connected is a priority for the students and going wireless is what they need,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>To accommodate the number of unique devices accessing the network, there are now 665 access points in residence, with a total of 1,325 across campus, ensuring a strong wireless connection as students walk in and out of buildings.<\/p>\n<p>However, Blasinski noted that wired connections will always be available at Brock, as going completely wireless \u201cposes security issues.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re constantly making improvements.
