{"id":40697,"date":"2016-08-30T11:00:34","date_gmt":"2016-08-30T15:00:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=40697"},"modified":"2016-08-31T09:09:52","modified_gmt":"2016-08-31T13:09:52","slug":"white-privilege-symposium-theme-is-academics-and-activists-advocating-for-equity-justice-and-action","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2016\/08\/white-privilege-symposium-theme-is-academics-and-activists-advocating-for-equity-justice-and-action\/","title":{"rendered":"White privilege symposium theme is Academics and Activists: Advocating for Equity, Justice and Action"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\u201cEducation is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.\u201d \u2013 Nelson Mandela.<\/p>\n<p>As an educator of future teachers, Associate Professor Dolana Mogadime finds profound meaning in the words of the late South African anti-apartheid revolutionary.<\/p>\n<p>In fact, she uses his book <em>Mandela\u2019s Way: Lessons on life, love and courage<\/em> in her classroom at Brock University.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt helps us to think through our own ways of teaching,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<p>An important aspect of her instruction is working to understand differences and how they impact a person\u2019s experience.<\/p>\n<p>Mogadime is a member of Brock\u2019s Racial Climate Task Force and the program director of the upcoming <a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2016\/05\/racial-issues-on-the-agenda-this-fall-as-us-conference-comes-to-brock\/\">White Privilege Symposium <\/a>being held at Brock Sept. 30-Oct. 1.<\/p>\n<p>Throughout her career, Mogadime has explored issues of race and in particular the lack of representation of Black women in academia.<\/p>\n<p>This year\u2019s symposium, the first-ever held in Canada, has the theme <em>\u201cAcademics &amp; Activists: Advocating for Equity, Justice and Action.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Mogadime says the conference aims to shed light on white privilege for academics, educators, professionals and community groups concerned about the wellbeing of diverse groups living, working and studying in Niagara and the GTA. She says it\u2019s a chance to network and coalition build around eradicating white supremacy, white privilege and racial oppression.<\/p>\n<p>She says discussions about white privilege and diversity are important, especially on a university campus.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a chance for us to really reimagine ourselves differently than we have been,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<p>Eddie Moore, Jr., founder of the international White Privilege Conference, called Brock a \u201cleader\u201d in Canada for recognizing the importance of the subject matter and having the \u201ccourage\u201d to bring together people working across privilege, race and borders.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_40706\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-40706\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-seenandheard wp-image-40706\" src=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/emj-promophoto-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"Eddie Moore, Jr. \" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-40706\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Eddie Moore, Jr.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u201cBrock is a leading university across the world that is willing to explore some really difficult issues and go beyond Diversity 101 and really look at diversity, power, privilege and leadership,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p>Moore says the speakers at the symposium aren\u2019t just giving a talk, they will be engaging the participants and challenging them with action items and ideas.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s so imperative to have educators involved in this discussion because we truly have the ability to impact the future of the world,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p>Mogadime says the symposium at Brock will cover a wide variety of perspectives related to white privilege, hearing from a diverse cross section of people including First Nations, Muslims, women and the LGBTQ community.<\/p>\n<p>The topics are not only important for educators, but also for students, she says.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf they can see the relevance of this, it will create an openness,\u201d she says. \u201cIt\u2019s an understanding we need to have in order to live in society.
