{"id":39975,"date":"2016-06-30T13:31:47","date_gmt":"2016-06-30T17:31:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=39975"},"modified":"2016-07-07T11:37:25","modified_gmt":"2016-07-07T15:37:25","slug":"ned-goodman-appointed-to-the-order-of-canada","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2016\/06\/ned-goodman-appointed-to-the-order-of-canada\/","title":{"rendered":"Ned Goodman appointed to the Order of Canada"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span class=\"page-intro dropcap\">Longtime Brock University supporter and benefactor Ned Goodman has been named to the Order of Canada.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Goodman, who served as Chancellor of Brock for eight years, is\u00a0among 113 Canadians to be recognized with one of the country\u2019s highest civilian honours.<\/p>\n<p>In the announcement Thursday, June 30, the Governor General of Canada said Goodman was named a member of the Order of Canada \u201cfor his contributions to Canada\u2019s investment industry and for his philanthropic support for higher education, culture and health care.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Goodman\u2019s legacy at Brock consists of much more than bestowing hundreds of degrees on proud graduates during years of Convocation ceremonies.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2012\/10\/brock-university-creates-the-goodman-school-of-business\/\" target=\"_blank\">In 2012, Brock\u2019s business faculty was renamed the Goodman School of Business in recognition of a transformational gift made to the University by the Goodman Foundation<\/a>. The generous donation provided key capital for an ambitious $22-million expansion and reconstruction of the Goodman School facility, to take place over the next two years. Because of Goodman\u2019s commitment, the Ontario government has also pledged $10-million to the project.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are thrilled to see Dr. Goodman\u2019s philanthropy recognized by the Order of Canada,\u201d said Barry Wright, Interim Dean of the Goodman School of Business. \u201cMany across our great country have benefited from his wisdom and generosity. This recognition is well-deserved.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Goodman, of Toronto, has had a successful career spanning more than 40 years, building several mining companies including International Corona and Kinross Gold.\u00a0In addition to being an outstanding member of the philanthropic community, Montreal-born Goodman is considered one of the leading architects of Canada\u2019s investment management industry.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_12700\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-12700\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-12700 size-thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/mccall-macbain-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"John McCall MacBain\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-12700\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">John McCall MacBain<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Goodman contributes widely to community-building as chairman emeritus of the Canadian Council of Christians and Jews, a governor of Junior Achievement of Canada, a vice-chair of the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Ontario and a member of the Toronto Society of Financial Analysts and the Canadian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy. He is a founding director of the Roasters Foundation, the Goodman Family Foundation and the Dynamic Fund Foundation. In 2015, Goodman received an honorary doctorate from Brock.<\/p>\n<p>Businessman, philanthropist and Niagara Falls native John H. McCall MacBain, who received an honorary doctorate from Brock in 2011, was named an officer of the Order of Canada Thursday. MacBain was with Trader Classified Media and helped grow the <em>Auto Trader<\/em> and numerous classified businesses. He was named a distinguished business leader by the Goodman School of Business in 2008.<\/p>\n<p>The Order of Canada was established in 1967, during Canada\u2019s centennial year, to recognize outstanding achievement, dedication to the community and service to the nation.
