{"id":39844,"date":"2016-06-24T13:37:06","date_gmt":"2016-06-24T17:37:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=39844"},"modified":"2016-06-24T13:37:06","modified_gmt":"2016-06-24T17:37:06","slug":"brexit-will-have-major-consequences-for-britain-and-the-eu-brock-prof-says","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2016\/06\/brexit-will-have-major-consequences-for-britain-and-the-eu-brock-prof-says\/","title":{"rendered":"Brexit will have major consequences for Britain and the EU; Brock prof says"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">A Brock University political scientist says the United Kingdom\u2019s vote to leave the European Union is \u201cthe most important development in European politics since the fall of the Berlin Wall.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Brock University associate professor Paul Hamilton says Brexit, and the subsequent resignation of Prime Minister David Cameron, \u00adwill have major consequences for Britain and the EU respectively.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cBrexit may, in a worst case scenario, lead to the breakup of the United Kingdom should Scotland decide to seek independence and EU membership. It may also threaten the EU project as other member states consider the exit option,\u201d he says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Brock political scientist Blayne Haggart sees many parallels between the politics behind Brexit and the 1995 referendum in Canada, where voters in Quebec were asked whether or not Quebec should become an independent country.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cIn both, you have a prime minister rolling the dice with the future of the country,\u201d he says. \u201cThings turned out differently, possibly in part because Quebecers and all Canadians have a sense of Canadianness, and successive federal governments worked to address Quebec\u2019s concerns.<\/span><span class=\"s1\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cPart of the problem with the Remain campaign seems to have been that there was no attachment to the European Union \u2014 a very weak sense of European identity.
