While waiting for a flight, Brock University Professor of Psychology Catherine Mondloch and her research team spotted a group of older women sitting at a nearby table.<\/p>\n<p>As she watched the women, Mondloch asked her student researchers to look at the women\u2019s faces and write down who they thought was the best-looking woman and why.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe traded notes,\u201d recalls Mondloch. \u201cThere was not a lot of consensus; people in our group varied on how attractive they thought each women was.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mondoch knew that faces considered to be \u201cattractive\u201d were usually ones that had \u201ctypical\u201d features. But what determines our ability to define a \u201ctypical\u201d \u2013 or \u201cnormal\u201d \u2013 face?<\/p>\n<p>That exercise led to one of three experiments in the group\u2019s study \u201cJudging Normality and Attractiveness in Faces: Direct Evidence of a More Refined Representation for Own-Race, Young Adult Faces,\u201d <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/pec.sagepub.com\/content\/early\/2016\/06\/21\/0301006616652044.full.pdf+html\" target=\"_blank\">published June 21 in the journal<\/a> <em>Perception<\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The basic idea behind the study is that we all have an impression of what a \u201ctypical\u201d face looks like: the \u201caverage\u201d size of eyes, nose, mouth, forehead; how these are placed proportionately to one another; and other features that make up a face.<\/p>\n<p>Drawing upon that typical face, we notice differences from what we consider to be \u201cnormal,\u201d such as eyes placed close together, a wide forehead, among others. These differences help us not only to remember or identify a face, but to judge how attractive we think that face is.<\/p>\n<p>But our ability to spot differences \u2013 and, hence, recognize faces or judge their attractiveness \u2013 is not consistent.<\/p>\n<p>Previous research has shown that we are <a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2015\/01\/adults-recognize-own-race-faces-more-accurately-than-other-race-faces-even-when-viewed-in-groups-brock-study\/\" target=\"_blank\">less able to recognize other-race faces<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2014\/12\/young-adults-can-be-trained-to-remember-older-faces-brock-research\/\" target=\"_blank\">older faces<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe were thinking that this is probably the case because people have less-refined face prototypes for other-race faces and old age faces,\u201d says the study\u2019s lead author, PhD student Xiaomei Zhou.<\/p>\n<p>She says many people have less exposure to, or experience with, people from other races and older adults, affecting their ability to form a mental image of a \u201cnormal\u201d face for these two groups.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_39819\" style=\"width: 418px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-39819\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-39819 \" src=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/Unknown.jpeg\" alt=\"In each pair, the left side shows the undistorted face (0%) and the right side shows the same identity with his\/her facial feature expanded 20%.\" width=\"408\" height=\"574\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-39819\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">In each pair, the left side shows the undistorted face (0%) and the right side shows the same identity with his\/her facial feature expanded 20%.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u201cThis is the first study where we provide direct and strong evidence suggesting that our face recognition models are less refined for these unfamiliar face categories,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<p>Which explains why the team at the Buffalo airport didn\u2019t reach a general agreement on who the most attractive older woman was, says Mondloch.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe logic here is that, if I don\u2019t know what a typical old face looks like, or I don\u2019t know what a typical other-race face looks like, then there should be much less consensus in terms of attractiveness ratings,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<p>In the study\u2019s first experiment, researchers created a seven-photo row of an Asian young man\u2019s face and a seven-photo row of a Caucasian young woman\u2019s face.<\/p>\n<p>In the centre of each row was the original, untouched photo of the \u201cnormal\u201d face. Three images to the right were distorted so that facial features were expanded 10, 20 and 30 per cent, making the face appear wider than the original. Three images to the left were compressed by 10, 20 and 30 per cent, showing facial features to be closer to each other than the original.<\/p>\n<p>The researchers showed photos from both rows to a group of young Caucasian adults in Canada and a group of young Asian adults in China. Almost all participants in both groups reported that none of their friends were from the other race.<\/p>\n<p>Participants saw various pairs of photos \u2013 one original and one distorted \u2013 from each racial group and were asked to identify which of the two images was \u201cnormal.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Both Caucasian and Asian participants were less able to detect the \u201cnormal\u201d image of the other-race photo compared to the photo of their own race.<\/p>\n<p>The second study provided converging evidence by measuring the extent to which participants agreed on the attractiveness of other-race faces.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause typical faces tend to be rated more attractive, this provides another measure of our knowledge of what typical faces from various groups look like,\u201d says Mondloch.<\/p>\n<p>Caucasian participants agreed more on the Caucasian faces they found attractive than on the Asian faces they rated as being attractive. Interestingly, Asian participants agreed equally on the attractiveness of both the Asian and Caucasian photos they rated.<\/p>\n<p>The study suggests this might be because Chinese participants were more exposed to \u201cattractive\u201d Caucasians appearing in Western movies, music videos and other media compared to Caucasians\u2019 limited access to Asian media.<\/p>\n<p>In a final study, a group of young adults and a group of senior citizens living in independent housing in the Niagara Region were shown photos of young and old faces and were asked to rate their attractiveness. Like other-race faces, older faces are harder to recognize. The researchers wanted to know whether this also might reflect a lack of knowledge about what a typical older face looks like.<\/p>\n<p>Both groups agreed more on which younger faces they found attractive compared to the older faces. The study notes that this is unusual, considering that older people presumably have more recent exposure to older faces than younger ones.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe suspect that the continuous young adult face bias in older adults reflects the special influence of early experience in shaping perceptual expertise \u2013 experience that is dominated by young faces,\u201d says the study.<\/p>\n<p>The research has far-ranging implications for society. Zhou notes that kindergarten teachers, for safety reasons, need to be able to recognize parents or grandparents who pick up their children at school.<\/p>\n<p>Border officials need to be able to match faces with picture ID, a task made more complicated by rising photo fraud, says Mondloch.
