{"id":39064,"date":"2016-05-19T09:20:15","date_gmt":"2016-05-19T13:20:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=39064"},"modified":"2024-01-26T14:50:32","modified_gmt":"2024-01-26T19:50:32","slug":"the-carroll-scholarship-will-help-students-from-africa-access-ma-in-political-science","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2016\/05\/the-carroll-scholarship-will-help-students-from-africa-access-ma-in-political-science\/","title":{"rendered":"The Carroll Scholarship will help students from Africa access MA in political science"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A full-time student from Africa entering Brock University&#8217;s MA program in Political Science will be eligible for a new financial award thanks to a donation from retired Associate Professor Terry Carroll and his wife Barbara Wake Carroll.<\/p>\n<p>In a fitting end to a year of activities marking the 50<sup>th<\/sup> anniversary of the Department of Political Science, a reception honouring the couple took place last week.<\/p>\n<p>Recognizing academic excellence\u00a0and financial need, the Carroll Scholarship in Political Science will be awarded annually to a full-time student from Africa.<\/p>\n<p>The scholarship, which is funded by the Carrolls\u2019 donation and matched by the Ontario Graduate Fellowship Program, will be awarded for the first time to a student who is entering the program in September of 2016.<\/p>\n<p>For over three decades, the MA in Political Science has attracted students from Africa, many of whom have gone on to doctoral and post-doctoral studies, as well as careers in law, teaching and politics. One graduate currently works in the President\u2019s Office\u00a0for\u00a0the Government of Ghana.<\/p>\n<p>As a faculty member at Brock, Terry Carroll, who specialized in the politics of developing areas, supervised many of these graduate students.
