{"id":38826,"date":"2016-05-02T15:09:53","date_gmt":"2016-05-02T19:09:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=38826"},"modified":"2016-05-05T15:17:43","modified_gmt":"2016-05-05T19:17:43","slug":"principals-scholarship-recipients-hope-to-continue-outreach-as-they-enter-university","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2016\/05\/principals-scholarship-recipients-hope-to-continue-outreach-as-they-enter-university\/","title":{"rendered":"Principal\u2019s Scholarship recipients hope to continue outreach as they enter university"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>High school is almost done for Sabrina Sapienza and Sarah Lanteigne, but their commitment to being involved in their community won\u2019t end when they start their post-secondary tenure at Brock University this fall.<\/p>\n<p>The two 18-year-old girls were named as the recipients of the 2016 Principal\u2019s Scholarship for Governor Simcoe Secondary School in St. Catharines Monday, May 2.<\/p>\n<p>They are among a group of 58 high school students from across the Niagara region who are receiving $2,500 entrance scholarships from Brock this year.<\/p>\n<p>The University\u2019s recruiting team has had a busy couple of weeks visiting nearly every secondary school in the region.<\/p>\n<p>Sapienza and Lanteigne were proud of what receiving the awards symbolizes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo me it means everything,\u201d said Sapienza, who is enrolling in concurrent education. \u201cIt was always important to be involved in student activities. To know that my hard work didn\u2019t go unnoticed is a really good feeling.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lanteigne, who will be taking kinesiology, said she\u2019s looking forward to being involved at Brock.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s good to know I\u2019m not just going to be another student at Brock, but I am going to be part of the Brock community and an asset to them,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>The recipients \u2014 two from each local high school \u2014 are selected by principals based on a combination of academic achievements and the students\u2019 involvement in school and in the community.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe want to seek the leaders who are graduating from high school because we want them to pursue both of those aspects in their development at Brock: their academic and intellectual development, but also their pattern of intense community engagement,\u201d said Brock President Jack Lightstone. \u201cWe hope they will become the community\u2019s future leaders.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>At Sir Winston Churchill earlier in the day Monday, when two graduating students were also presented with the awards, principal Carol Purcer called the Brock scholarships a \u201cwonderful incentive for our students.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She said picking the recipients wasn\u2019t an easy task.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMost kids who apply have done an awful lot at the school,\u201d she said. \u201cI have to weigh out those who really represent what the scholarship is all about &#8211; well-rounded citizens who we want to move forward.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Brock\u2019s recruiting team will continue to award the remaining scholarships this week.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_38904\" style=\"width: 1060px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-38904\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-38904\" src=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/Ridley-1050x538.jpg\" alt=\"Award presentation\" width=\"1050\" height=\"538\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-38904\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Brock University President Jack Lightstone, front row centre, presented Principal&#8217;s Scholarships to graduating Ridley College students Liam Wilson, left, and Mackenzie Berkhout.
