The St. Catharines resident is a strong\u00a0supporter of giving back to the community.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">For 24 hours from 7 a.m. March 18 to 7 a.m. March 19, Thomas is challenging himself as a way to give back.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">By Friday afternoon, he was on pace to\u00a0break the individual 24-hour world record for lightweight men ages 20-29.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The 22-year-old Economics\u00a0major is\u00a0looking to break the old\u00a0record held by\u00a0James Campbell of the United Kingdom\u00a0who\u00a0rowed 271, 897 meters from December 26-27, 2014.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Thomas began Friday outside the Ian Beddis Gymnasium at Brock and will finish Saturday\u00a0morning. He is looking to break\u00a0the record in memory of Clarence Blakely (1958-2015), his girlfriend&#8217;s late father,\u00a0with all proceeds raised going to the Canadian Cancer Society.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Blakely\u00a0was the front store manager at Shoppers Drug Mart in St. Catharines for 14 years. He loved his year-round golf, his Blue Jays and the Toronto Maple Leafs. Blakely\u00a0was also an avid leader in fundraising, and was always thinking of others.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">This past summer Thomas rowed\u00a0across Lake Ontario in support of the\u00a0SickKids Foundation.\u00a0After accomplishing his 50-km row and through his community involvement with \u2018Strokes for SickKids\u2019, Jacob was named the\u00a0Row Ontario DSA Peak Athlete of the Month in August.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Brock University men&#8217;s rower Jacob Thomas is always up for a challenge.
