{"id":38078,"date":"2016-03-15T11:23:14","date_gmt":"2016-03-15T15:23:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=38078"},"modified":"2016-03-15T11:29:47","modified_gmt":"2016-03-15T15:29:47","slug":"concurrent-education-student-embraces-the-opportunities-of-university-life","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2016\/03\/concurrent-education-student-embraces-the-opportunities-of-university-life\/","title":{"rendered":"Concurrent education student embraces the opportunities of university life"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>If you ask Alyssa Berardocco what she hopes to gain\u00a0from\u00a0her time at university, she&#8217;ll tell you it&#8217;s all about experiences.<\/p>\n<p>The fourth-year concurrent education student has spent the last four years stockpiling her agenda with extracurriculars, trusting that the broad, wealth of experiences will help take her career path from the abstract to the concrete.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI try to take advantage of all the opportunities that present themselves,\u201d said Berardocco. \u201cI don\u2019t know what else is out there, but I\u2019m excited to experience as much as I can and see where my education and experiences lead me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A current Brock University Students&#8217; Administrative Council councillor and president of the Concurrent Education Student Association, Berardocco keeps extremely busy.<\/p>\n<p>But, she wasn&#8217;t too busy to volunteer during Alternative Reading Week. For the second consecutive year, she travelled to Sumter, South Carolina in a trip organized by Student Life and Community Experience (SLCE). They were there to help Habitat for Humanity.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was working in the department of SLCE when I heard about the opportunity,\u201d she said. \u201cIt was kind of a last minute thing for me the first time around and I had such an incredible time that I really wanted to return back to the community of Sumter and do it again.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And do it again she did.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_38082\" style=\"width: 1060px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-38082\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-38082\" src=\"http:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/IMG_1272-1050x1400.jpg\" alt=\"Alyssa Berardocco in Sumter, South Carolina with Habitat for Humanity.\" width=\"1050\" height=\"1400\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-38082\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Alyssa Berardocco in Sumter, South Carolina with Habitat for Humanity.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Along with 20 other students, the group, working with the skilled professionals of Habitat for Humanity, was able to frame a house and set up the trusses for the roof during their five days of work \u2013 an impressive feat considering prior experience in construction was not prevalent on the resumes of many who participated.<\/p>\n<p>But, according to Berardocco, what they lacked in experience they all but made up for in excitement, enthusiasm and what she refers to as the \u2018Brock spirit.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou could see the energy and the positivity in the group \u2013 it was contagious,\u201d she said. \u201cWe brought a type of energy like no other and the spirit at the work site was unmatched.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Impressed by the Habitat for Humanity\u2019s leaders, Berardocco said their patience and \u201ccan do\u201d approach struck a chord with her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt really opened my eyes to being patient and seeing the positive effects of simple encouragement,\u201d she said. \u201cYou want to make sure everyone tries their best and if they make a mistake, who cares, it\u2019s OK, you can try it again and keep going. All of our nails were bent on the first day but we kept at it and helped each other, and by day five we realized we had framed an entire house.
