{"id":37978,"date":"2016-03-09T11:57:27","date_gmt":"2016-03-09T15:57:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=37978"},"modified":"2016-03-09T11:57:27","modified_gmt":"2016-03-09T15:57:27","slug":"grape-and-wine-celebration-toasts-top-promoters","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2016\/03\/grape-and-wine-celebration-toasts-top-promoters\/","title":{"rendered":"Grape and wine celebration toasts top promoters \u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">As part of the Cuv\u00e9e 2016 weekend, which celebrates excellence in Ontario winemaking, seven individuals were recognized for their contributions to growing and promoting the province\u2019s grape and wine industry.<\/span><span class=\"s1\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">The winners were revealed at a VIP awards ceremony prior to the sold-out 28th annual Cuv\u00e9e Grand Tasting held Friday, March 4 at the Scotiabank Convention Centre. Organized by Brock University\u2019s Cool Climate Oenology and Viticulture Institute (CCOVI), the event is one of the largest celebrations of VQA wine, showcasing each winemaker\u2019s favourite selection to a crowd of 800 guests.<\/span><span class=\"s1\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">The Tony Aspler Cuv\u00e9e Award of Excellence was presented to viticulturist Lloyd Schmidt, for advancing viticulture in Ontario by accessing the best vinifera varietals from nurseries around the world and fighting bureaucracy to do it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">Father and son grape growers Howard and Wes Lowrey from St. David\u2019s were honoured with the Cuv\u00e9e Vineyard of Excellence Award sponsored by BASF Canada Inc. The 2016 category was best red vinifera and the Lowrey\u2019s were recognized for their Cabernet Sauvignon vineyard. The awards acknowledge individuals who celebrate, through promotion and\/or education, the Ontario VQA wine industry with unselfish enthusiasm, constructive input and unsolicited promotion.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">The 2016 VQA Promoter Award winners in each category are:<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s2\">\u2022\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">Education: Peter Blakeman, program co-ordinator for culinary programs, Niagara College<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s2\">\u2022\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">Hospitality: Greg Elmhirst, general manager Elmhirst Resort<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s2\">\u2022\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">LCBO: Nina Hofer, product consultant, LCBO store 522<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s2\">\u2022\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">Promoter-at-Large: Norman Hardie, owner and winemaker Norman Hardie<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s2\">\u2022\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">Lifetime Achievement: Peter Gamble, winemaker and consultant<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">Proceeds from the Cuv\u00e9e Grand Tasting go to support the Cuv\u00e9e Legacy Fund established after the 2015 event. The fund has already awarded $15,000 in academic scholarships and contributed $13,000 toward industry-driven research projects.
