{"id":37895,"date":"2016-03-02T16:06:37","date_gmt":"2016-03-02T20:06:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=37895"},"modified":"2016-03-02T16:09:36","modified_gmt":"2016-03-02T20:09:36","slug":"one-brave-night-for-mental-health-happening-friday","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2016\/03\/one-brave-night-for-mental-health-happening-friday\/","title":{"rendered":"One Brave Night for Mental Health happening Friday"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span class=\"page-intro dropcap\">Michelle Balge knows how important help is when dealing with mental health issues.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>For years, she has struggled with severe depression and social anxiety.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve had suicidal thoughts since I was 14,\u201d she says. \u201cOnce I did reach out, that\u2019s when I started the healing process. If I didn\u2019t get help, I wouldn\u2019t be here right now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In high school and again in university, she reached out and found the resources she needed to feel better and overcome her struggles.<\/p>\n<p>The fourth-year sociology student wants to inspire other people with mental health issues to do the same if they need help.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"pull-quote\">If I didn\u2019t get help, I wouldn\u2019t be here right now.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are services at Brock University and the Niagara Region that can help people,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Brock University\u2019s Students\u2019 Union has teamed up with the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health for One Brave Night for Mental Health being held Friday, March 4 from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m.<\/p>\n<p>The overnight event is aimed at raising money for CAMH and raising awareness about mental health and the supports available.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are always so focused on our studies so we need ways to cope and gain different skills and tools to do that,\u201d Balge says. \u201cMental health awareness is so important to everybody, whether they are facing their own issues or not.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Brian Hansell, founder of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.paulhansellfoundation.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Paul Hansell Foundation<\/a>, will be speaking about the loss of his son Paul, who was a first-year Brock student when he died. The foundation\u2019s goal is to eliminate the stigma of mental illness and support youth-based mental health programs.<\/p>\n<p>The night also includes other speakers, yoga, zumba, mental health bingo, movies and board games.<\/p>\n<p>Food and snacks are free at the event, which is non-alcoholic. It\u2019s being held at Isaac\u2019s on campus.<\/p>\n<p>The Brock Badgers team has raised the most money with $2,735 for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.onebravenight.ca\" target=\"_blank\">One Brave Night<\/a>, which is holding events across the country.<\/p>\n<p>Balge said it\u2019s free to register and everyone is welcome.
