{"id":37837,"date":"2016-02-29T12:47:44","date_gmt":"2016-02-29T16:47:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=37837"},"modified":"2016-02-29T12:47:44","modified_gmt":"2016-02-29T16:47:44","slug":"brocks-wrestling-dynasty-continues","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2016\/02\/brocks-wrestling-dynasty-continues\/","title":{"rendered":"Brock\u2019s wrestling dynasty continues"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Brock University men&#8217;s and women&#8217;s wrestling teams were crowned 2016 CIS National Champions in front of a capacity crowd at the Bob Davis Gymnasium Saturday afternoon.<\/p>\n<p>The Brock men finished with a total of 80 points, with all 10 wrestlers collecting a medal, finishing with two gold, six silver and two bronze.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/gobadgers.ca\/roster.aspx?rp_id=4055\">Jevon Balfour<\/a>\u00a0(82kg) and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/gobadgers.ca\/roster.aspx?rp_id=4074\">Mizam Tamaradze<\/a>\u00a0(62kg) both captured gold.\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/gobadgers.ca\/roster.aspx?rp_id=4062\">Sam Jagas<\/a>\u00a0(54kg),\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/gobadgers.ca\/roster.aspx?rp_id=4057\">Brian Cowan<\/a>\u00a0(57kg),\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/gobadgers.ca\/roster.aspx?rp_id=4058\">Zack Falcioni<\/a>\u00a0(65kg),\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/gobadgers.ca\/roster.aspx?rp_id=4061\">Matt Jagas<\/a>\u00a0(68kg),\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/gobadgers.ca\/roster.aspx?rp_id=4072\">Tyler Rowe<\/a>\u00a0(72kg) and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/gobadgers.ca\/roster.aspx?rp_id=4070\">Ignatius Pitt<\/a>\u00a0(100kg) all took home silver, while\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/gobadgers.ca\/roster.aspx?rp_id=4071\">Clayton Pye<\/a>(90kg) and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/gobadgers.ca\/roster.aspx?rp_id=4067\">Chance Mutuku<\/a>\u00a0(76kg) finished with bronze.<\/p>\n<p>The Brock women, who finished with 69 points, took home medals in seven of eight weight classes, highlighted by four gold and three silver. They become the first women&#8217;s team to capture five consecutive CIS national wrestling titles.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/gobadgers.ca\/roster.aspx?rp_id=4085\">Kristina Mclaren<\/a>\u00a0(51kg),\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/gobadgers.ca\/roster.aspx?rp_id=4093\">Carlene Sluberski<\/a>\u00a0(55kg),\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/gobadgers.ca\/roster.aspx?rp_id=4092\">Emily Schaefer<\/a>\u00a0(59kg) and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/gobadgers.ca\/roster.aspx?rp_id=4080\">Olivia Di Bacco<\/a>\u00a0(72kg) and captured gold in their respective weight classes. Taking home silver medals were\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/gobadgers.ca\/roster.aspx?rp_id=4083\">Farrantina Gatta<\/a>\u00a0(48kg),\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/gobadgers.ca\/roster.aspx?rp_id=4086\">Indira Moores<\/a>\u00a0(63kg) and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/gobadgers.ca\/roster.aspx?rp_id=3357\">Jessica Brouilette<\/a>e (67kg).<\/p>\n<p>Brock captain,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/gobadgers.ca\/roster.aspx?rp_id=4080\">Olivia Di Bacco<\/a>\u00a0goes out on top, winning her first individual CIS gold at 72kg, and becomes the first women&#8217;s wrestler to lead her team to five straight CIS national championships.<\/p>\n<p>UNB&#8217;s Alyssa Cleaves along with Alberta&#8217;s Michael Asselstine and Winnipeg&#8217;s Finn Higgins were named the 2016 CIS Most Outstanding Wrestlers. The Golden Bears Asselstine becomes the first male wrestler to win the award three consecutive seasons.<\/p>\n<p>Brock&#8217;s\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/gobadgers.ca\/coaches.aspx?rc=145\">Marty Calder<\/a>\u00a0was named the 2016 CIS Men&#8217;s and Women&#8217;s Coach of the Year.\u00a0Other major award winners included Western&#8217;s Ligrit Sadiku and Saskatchewan&#8217;s Kiera Prior who were named the 2016 CIS Rookies of the Year. York&#8217;s Alexandria Town and Winnipeg&#8217;s Brock Munro were the R.W Pugh Fair Play Award recipients.
