The Brock University men’s and women’s wrestling teams were crowned 2016 CIS National Champions in front of a capacity crowd at the Bob Davis Gymnasium Saturday afternoon.<\/p>\n
The Brock men finished with a total of 80 points, with all 10 wrestlers collecting a medal, finishing with two gold, six silver and two bronze.<\/p>\n
Jevon Balfour<\/a>\u00a0(82kg) and\u00a0Mizam Tamaradze<\/a>\u00a0(62kg) both captured gold.\u00a0Sam Jagas<\/a>\u00a0(54kg),\u00a0Brian Cowan<\/a>\u00a0(57kg),\u00a0Zack Falcioni<\/a>\u00a0(65kg),\u00a0Matt Jagas<\/a>\u00a0(68kg),\u00a0Tyler Rowe<\/a>\u00a0(72kg) and\u00a0Ignatius Pitt<\/a>\u00a0(100kg) all took home silver, while\u00a0Clayton Pye<\/a>(90kg) and\u00a0Chance Mutuku<\/a>\u00a0(76kg) finished with bronze.<\/p>\n The Brock women, who finished with 69 points, took home medals in seven of eight weight classes, highlighted by four gold and three silver. They become the first women’s team to capture five consecutive CIS national wrestling titles.<\/p>\n Kristina Mclaren<\/a>\u00a0(51kg),\u00a0Carlene Sluberski<\/a>\u00a0(55kg),\u00a0Emily Schaefer<\/a>\u00a0(59kg) and\u00a0Olivia Di Bacco<\/a>\u00a0(72kg) and captured gold in their respective weight classes. Taking home silver medals were\u00a0Farrantina Gatta<\/a>\u00a0(48kg),\u00a0Indira Moores<\/a>\u00a0(63kg) and\u00a0Jessica Brouilette<\/a>e (67kg).<\/p>\n Brock captain,\u00a0Olivia Di Bacco<\/a>\u00a0goes out on top, winning her first individual CIS gold at 72kg, and becomes the first women’s wrestler to lead her team to five straight CIS national championships.<\/p>\n UNB’s Alyssa Cleaves along with Alberta’s Michael Asselstine and Winnipeg’s Finn Higgins were named the 2016 CIS Most Outstanding Wrestlers. The Golden Bears Asselstine becomes the first male wrestler to win the award three consecutive seasons.<\/p>\n
